What to bid after partner jumps to 3[spades]
jikl replied to mrdct's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
You can't bid 4C, she'll take that as Gerber :P Sean -
I also recommend Dormer on Deduction
-
1NT - 2♦ - 2♥* - 2♠ for me also. The reason for the * is that you can have the really good news of a super accept here. Sean

I have had a 7 high hand and unfortunately I was playing rubber bridge for money. Sean
-
Funny hand, personally I would cue raise with the North hand. However I think a lot of people would find this bid more easily if North was already a passed hand, then noone would feel guilty about cue raising. Sean

1♦ 1NT 2♦ for me. Sean

A "Tweener" or a clear choice?
jikl replied to masse24's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
And this brings the question that any partnership should answer. Is there, or should there be a hand that is too weak for a 1♠ opening yet too strong for a weak 2♠ opening. Personally my answer is no, because partner will never pick you for the hand. Sean -
For me it is 2♥. Yes I would like a better suit, yes I would like a longer suit; but I have what I have. If I am to make game I see 4♥ as a more likely making contract. If 4♥ is not the spot I have 3NT as backup. If you swapped the red suits I would probably bid NT since I am a hell of a long way from 5♦ and much closer to getting doubled. Sean

I am 4♣ over 1♣. Less sure about 1♠ but probably 4♣ since I am likely to "transfer" them into 4♠. I would be happier doing this with a singleton ♠ since then it is more likely partner might have more. Sean
-
The only time I would even dream of saying "Take your time" would be if my partner has his back to the time clock and specifically asks me how much time is left in the round. Sean

I pass, and if partner has the perfect trap pass hand for this I say sorry; I expect this maybe 2-3 out of 10 times. I will make a profit. There are so few redeeming features about my hand apart from the 2 As and 1 K I used to open this. No suit quality, not even a singleton in ♥; put the A somewhere else and leave me with the small singleton in ♥ and I might be tempted. It is a hand I am happy let them to play at the one level. Partner either has crap which means they have stuffed up, or partner has a monster with ♥s, or noone has anything more than a 9-11 count, or heavy point overcall and poor suit, or sort of good suit without high honours (J109xxx) and middling points. If first option, pass is good. If second option pass is bad, third option, let them play at the one level in what is likely a misfit, 4th option these often play like NTs and they have more points, 5th option partner has KQ874 of ♥ and 9-10ish and is borderline these can go either way. And you want me to commit to a penalty sequence at the one level? Sean

WDNPG appeared on convention cards a lot when I used to play. Sean

Hanoi5, Get in touch with Peter Gill, he will have the information. (He posted earlier in the thread) Sean

I pass, if partner has real values instead of balancing values they might double again. Sean

Very basic but a vexed question
jikl replied to Wackojack's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I think it is simpler than that and goes to the 1NT response to 1x, it is 6-9, therefore make it 6 for all bids so there is less to remember. Sean -
Because they have done something for the 2nd time ever Sean
-
What does this mean in your system?
jikl replied to Bende's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Not that I play much any more, but here is what it would be from back then: 1♣ 4+ ♣ (not 12-14 bal) 1♦ natural (5)6+ probably denies 5♦ and 4♣ and 10+ (forcing) 1♥ shows 5+♣ and 4♥ (forcing) (all balanced 15-18 would now bid 1NT with a checkback of sorts) denies a 4414 15-18 1♠ naturalish suggesting misfit but not really suited for NT from that side (forcing) so could be a complete lie just wanting to hear what comes next 1NT minimum, hand not suited to open an offshape weak NT (points in short suits), denies a 4405, denies a 0445, denies a 4414 with a stiff king or A 2♣ to play, probably 4153, could easily be 4252 and not suited to NT I know it is ancient stuff, but saw nothing else here similar Sean -
Hrm, Roland going on holiday for a month, Ashes about to start... Enjoy the cricket Roland :P Sean
-
High ♦, I have no idea if it is right or not but I do know I will never hear the end of it from partner if it is right. Sean
-
It is a clear pass but given the poll it is probably 6♥ that is right on this hand :P Sean
-
3♦ for me as a mini splinter if I can, otherwise 3♠. The 4 level is too big without help. (I have sympathy for 2♠ also) Sean
-
Say good riddance to North Jilly, you did nothing wrong despite what they said to cover up the mistake on their part. Sean
-
3♦, the auction isn't over yet. Sean

Oh, new version of Windows, that means Vista might actually be stable and good by now. I think I will stay with XP for a year or so to see how bad this one is first. Sean PS: And it will probably require 8GB+ of RAM to run at a decent speed; they of the code bloat :P
