  2. 2♣, showing 22+ points or 8.5 tricks, luckily I have both, WTP?
  3. C'mon you two, this was obviously intended as a funny, though it missed the mark.
  4. You doubled the 4♠ runout, get your facts straight. You seem to imply that your opponents somehow 'knew' that you were playing from the same location. That's not so unless they're hackers or you volunteered that information. Your competitive record (at least for the past month) is already available to all. But the existence of a few 35% games isn't proof that cheating has never occurred (hey, it might even provide evidence of motive.) Bottom line, have a thicker skin with respect to random internet folks and report people who throw the C word around.
  5. Speaking of which ... this link was on my yahoo homepage. http://video.yahoo.com/network/100000086?v...561&l=100000085 I suppose they thought they were 'helping'. I think bringing a dog would have been more helpful than a napsack.
  6. Re: irresponsible and uncontrolled breeding Hitler gave eugenics a bad name. But without SOME means of kick-starting human evolution again, we're all screwed. Hoping that our species 'grows up'? Ummm, it won't if the only criterion for breeding is having a willing partner. I can't begin to fathom how (or if) this problem will be resolved, but if we as a species ever wish to progress significantly beyond being hairless chimpanzees, we should give it some thought.
  7. Or banning bridge because it makes people jump off bridges and stuff.
  8. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090514/ap_en_..._farrah_fawcett Sorry 'bout the hijacking. Didn't think it deserved its own thread but was curious how others felt about it.
  9. I agree about tips. Speaking of other truly unimportant stuff ... anybody watching Farrah's Story? (Or am I being too harsh?)
  10. HAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNN!!!!!!! Oh sorry, I thought this was the Star Trek thread.
  11. Only time I see Notes disappear is when I'm partnering someone (which sucks, since I often have specific agreements written there and it makes no sense to black them out if I'm allowed/encouraged to look at my own CC as I am on BBO.)
  12. Hi Tom, If you mean have the option to only watch 1 hand (and later dummy when it appears,) that option already exists. Options -> At a table -> When kibitzing , etc.
  13. I'm a tad confused. When you say 'after the round had been played' do you mean 'after the trick had been played'? If so, your partner should have accepted the undo if that was in the tournament rules. "I would like to point out here that the undo was not an obvious one, as some players might play low fearing their partners have the singleton J." Your bridge analysis is incorrect/misleading. [hv=n=sak643&w=s&e=sqt72&s=s]399|300|[/hv] Your partner cashed the King and then led a low one. Singleton J whatnow? I loathe undos (they encourage people to play a game that is not bridge) but if mandatory acceptance of them is in the rules, follow the rules, or choose a different tourney. As has already been pointed out, you received a higher score than you earned on the board (down 1 would have earned your side roughly 25%,) so the only people who have a valid beef with respect to the actual score awarded are your opponents. None of this excuses the TD's behavior, if it is (and the rest of the facts are) as you described. Please let us know if the situation was resolved to your satisfaction. http://www.bridgebase.com/myhands/fetchlin...ayed=1241923223
  14. And here I thought this thread would be about Roland being master of his own domain. Tell us about this hand, Roland. http://forums.bridgebase.com/index.php?showtopic=32080
  15. This is pathetic. Blame the vugraph operator. Blame the director (who was trying to help them out by warning against a sure-to-lose appeal, which isn't particularly uncommon last I checked.) Blame the rules. Blame the fact that one of the pairs is 'famous.' Ignore the blatantly self-serving comments, annoyance at the honest, relevant and appropriate testimony of a completely impartial observer, and beyond-dubious arguments. I can't STAND it when people get preferential treatment just because of WHO THEY ARE, but this is not one of those cases.
  16. I watched the hand on Vugraph. I agree with Fred and Jan. If the opening leader perceived a BIT, he did a very bad thing. I find efforts to cast aspersions on the vugraph operator to be disgusting. I would want an objective witness at the table regardless of which side I was on. I would not be 'annoyed', I would be relieved, in such an instance. I think the vugraph operator did a fantastic job and I would, in almost all circumstances (barring some weird axe-to-grind situation,) trust the opinion of a vugraph operator over the opinion of any of the participants. Self-serving arguments, shudder, etc. This wasn't a close decision in any way, shape, or form.
  17. Does nobody bid 3N with 3-3-3-4 or 3-3-4-3 and 13-15? I'm one of those who find the idea of bidding 2♣ with 3-4-4-2 foreign. Have to lose a few IMPs before I buy.
  18. Toto we're not in Kansas anymore.
  19. Chas, How do you get from the quote you cited to the opinion you expressed? Regardless, you're wrong. As I stated in my original post, Fred can make whatever rules he damn well pleases. And I can gripe about them, because it's a free country. And he can ignore my gripes or react to them or embrace them or whatever. If your opinion is that no user of BBO should ever express any opinion about (or critical of) BBO policies simply because BBO is free, you're wrong about that too. Let me know if that's the case and I'd be happy to debate that point.
  20. I suspect she was a spy. Just a hunch. She strikes me as the kind of uber over-achiever that the CIA would recruit. Torture can never be legal. Ticking time bombs are fiction. If you insist on an answer to the hypothetical where you 'know' that if you don't torture that thousands or more will die, then that's on the interrogator. If he tortures and saves the day, he'll be a hero to millions and his conviction will be pardoned or at least commuted. I agree with the sentiment that Abraham Lincoln was wrong. Dead wrong. Most overrated president EVER (though Reagan is close second.) As usual, is right on the money. (Torture comments begin about 1:30 in.)
  21. So you're saying that my original comment, as written, was a statement of fact, Josh? Should I bid 3NT? How should I play this hand? What should BBO policy be on this issue? These are all solicitations of opinion. You're quibbling for the sake of quibbling. I'm so sick of fants.
  22. Josh, 'Fred should not go to the beach without sunscreen' is not an opinion? Agreed, it borders on fact, but still, it is an opinion. In bridge laws, 'should', 'shall' and 'must' all have different meanings that express varying degrees of obligation. Obviously I wasn't using the word in a legal context. Your third example is a different usage of the word entirely. I accept your quibble that I overgeneralized. But is that the best you can do? Let me rephrase and see if I can escape pedantic objection this time: In the grammatical context and conversational environment in which I used it, 'you should' or 'it shouldn't be' always precedes an opinion.
  23. LOL @ Fred The word 'should' always precedes an OPINION, Fred, not a 'statement of fact.'
  24. Fred's back on his 'if you allow anything you must allow everything' tear. His snark coupled with comments like 'attention-seeking profile' are misguided. As a rule of thumb, if it wouldn't be censored by broadcast TV, it shouldn't be censored by BBO. If people complain frivolously, give them a 'complaint without merit penalty point'. Accumulate a few of those and your complaints get ignored. That being said, BBO is a great and inexpensive way to play and watch bridge, regardless of how poorly they handle this particularly issue and as a private company they are free to do whatever the hell they want. When they learn that it's NOT their job to 'ensure that 250,000 people have a good BBO experience' but to ensure that 250,000 people have the tools at their disposal to give THEMSELVES a good BBO experience (through filters or whatever,) they'll save themselves a lot of aggravation and make their product better in the process.
