  1. 25 points between us and yet game has very poor prospects. I suspect most will be in 3N. So what chance of making? With my 4 tricks n the majors, it looks like I need to find 5 tricks in the minors. At best I have 3 diamond tricks and even making 2 club tricks looks problematic because the opportunity may get 5 tricks first 1S, 1H, 1D and 2C. My instinct would be to play on Ds first likely going 1 or even 2 off. So win H with K in hand and play 4D up to Ace and the King drops. This changes things. I castile make 3 diamond tricks, but losing the lead to do so means that if I next play on clubs I have to lose 2 club tricks and in the process I lose 1s 1h 1d 2c = 5 tricks and down 1. So next I could try for a miracle in clubs. 2c to Q which holds. Back with 3c and lo... the 10 comes up. Now Kc and I have time to set up 3 club tricks and 1spade. Add my 2d and 3 tricks makes 9. I think it unlikely that I could successfully reason this way at the table. I would probably go down. However, maybe an expert declarer could reason this way and make. Excuse the rudimentary nomenclature. I am on a beach holiday with just an unfamiliar smart phone.

At trick 3 I must refuse to cover Eats QD with My King. I can work out that East will be 4144 and so West has Ace doubleton diamonds. If I duck I now have a finessing position in diamonds Q10 over Easts J2. Sadly I lazily covered with my King over east's Q and went down 1 as did Nigel.

  9. After 2 weeks of renewing challenges against gerardo the latest one has now timed out. This is my remaining match. From tomorrow I am travelling and will not be able to accept a challenge from him until Fri 11th Jan. Gerardo, if you could put in a challenge today I will be able to complete it before I leave.

Your next bid as South. There are 17 imps on your decision. Then take a look at B7
  15. I proudly present a victory for GIB https://webutil.bridgebase.com/v2/tview.php?t=ARDCHALLENGE:9e3cdc54.02de.11e9.a82b.0cc47a39aeb4-1545149077&u=Wackojack Wackojack 2 GIB 19
  16. Forget that GIB is your partner for a moment. This is an excellent slam to be in. So how with normal methods do you get there? It appears to me that North with a 15 count can do no more than bid 3NT after 1N-2H -2S. However, since South has 3 card spade support 17 points and a doubleton can now painlessly cue 4C, then cue 4D, 4H and 6S can be reached with ease.
  17. Hearts are more likely to be 5-3 than 4-4. Play spades 3-3: = 8 tricks 9 if lucky If spades 4-2: = 7 tricks Play up to K clubs and clubs 3-2: If K onside I make 8 tricks or 9 if East plays low AND spades 3-3 otherwise 8 If K offside then if spades 4-2 I make 6 tricks (opps cash 4 hearts and switch to a diamond) If spades 3-3 then I make 8 tricks Close decision. I think just play off the spades
  18. Yes that is another possibility if agreed. Then presumably you have to double. Sorry for reply triplication. Trouble with android away on hols.
  19. I believe a better treatment is to bid 3d showing a diamond stop and values for game. 3c would show a club stop. Partner would then bid 3nt. To look for a 44 major suit fit is likley counter productive since the suit has a good chance of breaking 41. WIth length in both minors then double by all means. What woulda pass in this situation show? Possibly nothing to say or possibly holding both majors waiting to double for take out the 3d rebid.
  20. I believe that a better treatment here is to bid 3d showing a diamond stop and denying a club stop. (3c would show a club stop and values for game) Partner would then bid on. Generally to look for a 44 major suit fit is likely a bad move as the suit has a good chance of breaking 41. With length in both minors then double by all means. What would a pass in this position mean? Possibly nothing to say but also possibly having both majors and game values waiting to double for take_out the 3rd response.

  22. Yes as Helene said: I was sitting in the opposite seat on this hand too. I just wanted to check that the forum would not have raised to 3♦ with rubbish 3 card support and instead rebid 2♠ with a good 6 card suit.

  24. Fantastic Helene you got it. I am surprised that nobody said that bidding 2 ♠ was insane. Were they afraid of hurting my feelings :) The point of this post is that paradoxically if I am bold and overcall 2♦ the opps get too high and if I pass my GIB partner pushes me way too high. GIB is very strange sometimes.
