Disclosing a nonstandard 1NT opening (ACBL)
3for3 replied to Siegmund's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
See case 30 from New Orleans, 2003. Bottom line is that one should alert. -
I have a leftover blue rectangle on my computer from a failed login. It will not go away. I have tried rebooting. I have tried CTRL-ALT-DEL. There are no programs running to make this blue thing appear. It won't go away. Any suggestions? Problem fixed on second reboot

What is a cold contract?
3for3 replied to Siegmund's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Perhaps a better question: Where does the term come from? Why is not a Hot contract? Danny -
I was on lead against 4 of a major with AKTx. Dummy and partner had xxx and declarer had QJx. I cashed ace, and declarer played queen. I cashed King, and declarer was right there with the Jack. My ten won the 3d round of the suit, and the 13er enabled partner to uppercut declarer. Down 1.

A limited BAM only needs to be 2 days. Make it the last weekend, and those who are unlucky in the Swiss or Reisinger can play in it. Danny

Craig Ganzer is looking. He posted on FB

The contract is displayed in a different area than the auction. One could still ask about a particular bid, and its meaning. You just have to remember the bids in real life. Danny

Can I put stupidest falsecard in? I was on lead against 4 of a major with AKTx. Dummy and partner had xxx and declarer had QJx. I cashed ace, and declarer played queen. I cashed King, and declarer was right there with the Jack. My ten won the 3d round of the suit, and the 13er enabled partner to uppercut declarer. Down 1.

How do you play?
3for3 replied to Little Kid's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I agree that the spade length inference is of little value on this hand. However, you definitely don't want another spade played, and your RHO is close to 100% to continue spades, your LHO is not -
One way BBO differs from real life is that you can review the auction any time you want to during the hand. After the first trick, in real life, this is no longer possible. What is the general consensus: Should the auction stay visible for the players after trick one? Danny

Setting the record straight
3for3 replied to buffytvs's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
As I understood it, and according to Wolff's book, the Ace of Spades was face up as the top card. No chance for someone to hide that... -
Question to the simulators: How often does 6♦ go for some massive number?
-
The diagram needs to be ammended to give North 4-5 in the minors. Way to go, team Diamond!
-
We tie two more things into the 2♠ ask: Over 3♣ we can show all 4441's below 3nt 3♦ Red suit singleton 3 ♥ Short spades 3♠ Short clubs Also, Responder can now play 4 of a major from his side, if desired. Danny

I am surprised that a computer isn't better at GO than bridge. GO is a game of perfect information, which must be easier to solve than games without PI

This has probably been discussed (a lot) in the past, but is this true? I would guess that the chances that the best team loses a single KO match are greater than the chances they fail to finish first in a round robin. Of course, length of matches and seeding would be important factors. Given the 11.5 days they had for the event, one could play 120 board matches. That would be far better for picking the winner of an event like this. It would be far worse for picking 6/7 teams they needed to select.
-
Knockouts are much better for picking the one best team. Since the goal is to pick the 6 best teams, RR is much fairer. Even if one were picking 8 teams, or some other power of 2, RR is better.

Funny, but I bet most experts do play SOME stolen bid doubles. I personally play that double of 2♣ over 1NT is Stayman, and that most doubles of low level cue bids are 'stolen' bids as well. Does anyone really play 1♠-2♣-P-2♠ Double as anything other than, I want to compete in Spades? Danny

He has already failed in containing the consequences. The administration's failure to have more resources dedicated to this is a failure similar to the slow Katrina response. To be clear, I am talking containment, not the capping of the well itself Danny

It is like real estate, location*3 Jacks and Tens in insolation are of dubious value. Add them to a Queen and they are clearly more value than Goren. ATx Jxxx KQx AQx Versus Axx QJTx KQx Axx Surely the second hand isfar better than the first. In other words, J/T are more context dependent than the higher honors. Danny

I am a club leader. The bit about the failure to double 2♣ is a red herring, IMO. RHO surely has 2+ clubs, and most competent LHO's do as well. The chances of partner having 5 clubs good enough are just so small that I deem the choice to really come down to what is in your hand, and that Jack of Diamonds is just too big a card to lead away from, especially at matchpoints. Danny For the result merchants, a diamond was the winner
-
After a Stayman auction, the opponents reach 3NT, with both players having one major. You are on lead with Jxxx of Diamonds and 98xx of clubs. It is matchpoints. Which minor do you lead (sorry, I don't know the rest of the hand). Assume you have an entry and about 5 HCP in the majors, say Ax and Jxx. Would you lead differently at IMPs?

I find it remarkable that a Precision 2♣ opening is legal at the GCC level because it is a natural bid (showing clubs). While a 2♥ showing 5 Hearts and 4+ cards in a side suit - also natural - is illegal for midchart events... Maybe I am misreading it, but doesn't that say a WEAK 2 showing 5♥and4♠? That is VASTLY different from an opening range hand showing same. One is constructive, the other is not. Flannery 2♥ is a legal method, even in GCC, if I am not mistaken.
-
I am not sure the notion that you are guaranteed the best hand is real bridge. It probably doesn't matter often, but can't one take inference about the opponents hands knowing you have as many or more HCP as they do? As an alternative, just guarantee that the player gets 11 or more points. Then no such inference could be drawn. Please note I have never played these events, just wondering Danny

Mr. Kokish and his relay
3for3 replied to kenberg's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Fred's wrinkle is better if one bids 2♣ frequently with 2 suiters. I believe that 3♣ showing 1 suiter is better if one avoids that... Danny
