  1. I've offered some coworkers either side of 5% plus a half a voter at 1.9 odds. That's where I draw the line.
  2. (1♦) Pass (1♥) Pass; (1N) Pass (2♦) Pass; (Pass) Dbl
  3. 1N (2♦) 2♥ where 2♦ is at least 4-4 in the red suits.
  4. And that your partner didn't have a double of 5♦! He had a double, only that it was described by spite

the reverse of this is not necessarily the case, though.... Weed, burns, smells good; tobacco, burns, smells good; non-dairy creamer, burns (explodes even), smells good. By the sort of induction used in clinical trials (p = 0.25 here!), the converse is clearly true, matmat.
  8. Never seen this hand before, but 4♠ wtp?
  9. Uh 3♣ wtp when sober? 4♣ to help it sink in if partner hasn't already noticed that I wasn't. Judging from the ensuing 'discussion', the four pass votes came from terminals attended by monkeys with high probability. By the theory of monkeys, only about (22-4 =) 18 of the 3♣ votes are legitimate in expectation.
  10. Both Gnome and I think the normal order is J-K-Q. While there is no certain way to convey this message, it makes it much less likely partner will make a fatal first discard. Partner may be able to infer that you're drawing trumps from the double anyways.
  11. [hv=d=e&v=n&s=saqjxxhkd10xxcakjx]133|100|Scoring: IMP 1♥ Dbl 4♥ 5♣ Pass to you[/hv] Barometer is on: you are down three IMPs with two normalish results and this board to go.
  12. Takeout seems all too normal, showing a 2434 hand with about 12-14, a 3424 hand with 10-11, or a 1444 hand in either range. Without the monkey option, I would expect this to be a curveball.
  13. [hv=d=w&v=n&s=skq10xxhkqxdakxcqx]133|100|Scoring: IMP Pass Pass 2♦ to you[/hv]

  15. I live in Maine and am a member of the Maine Unit, not EMBA (Eastern Massachusetts Bridge Association). That does mean we are both members of District 25 (New England Bridge Conference). I believe Jason (jchiu) has move out of District 25. Tim I meant the same unit as jchiu when he was on the unit board. He's since moved twice. For some reason I interpreted your earlier message as saying that you were in our unit, I must have misread. Yes, I was on the Eastern Mass. Bridge Association board during my senior year of college from August 2004 to May 2005. When I was elected, I was 18 years 9 months, which was probably close to how old Tim was when he was elected to his unit board in college. In the Boston area, a lot of the younger people running during my time were seen as overly aggressive, and I still wonder how I wasn't perceived that way with my hot temper at tournaments. This factor may have led to more players choosing the status quo board of older players. I have since moved twice to Central New Jersey (D3U140) and San Jose (D21U507). However, I have not served in any bridge politics organization since.
  16. extreme? What's extreme about a 5-card suit? favourable vulnerability, third seat P P ? xx AQJx xx xxxxx We've all done it, but I'm content opening 1 on these hands. This surely implies that you're getting old, Mr. Clayton ...
  17. Playing strong and five, I'd probably bid Stayman and worry about my real call when partner bids 2♥. Ideally, I would like to agree spades, keycard, then signoff in 6♠.
  18. If I recall correctly, Jones and Rosen were part of the defending Liggins team from last year. Among the favorites, the committee still doesn't see that Wolfarth manages to pull something out of his briefcase every year. I'll be rooting for them and the mostly Dutch five-seed.
  19. Which choice do I vote for if I want to bid 4♣?
  20. But -790 is so much fun!
  21. Oh yeah??? You play cards like the rueful rabbit!
  22. East opens 1♦. State your line(s). [hv=d=e&v=b&n=sa763h72dkj73cq54&w=shdc&e=shdc&s=s852haq84da6cak32]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv]
  23. Mateusz just had to click on the monkey option!
