3H, V vs NV it means you expect to make it. I can't see why you have to commit yourself to game without consulting parter at all. if partner has little cards, it would be bloody. Also, opponents are more likely to double you when you already in game if it's a marginal call.

A, C, D. B is not a 1st/2nd seat opening hand unless you play light open by agreement.

Another one from last night
arrows replied to mike777's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
pass, nothing else to say -
if one plays constructive raise, this is a perfect hand for 2H, showing roughly 10-11 playing points. if one doesn't play constructive raise, 2H looks a bit conservative, but definitely acceptable. The problem of 1S first, is no good bid next round.

For me, double means "useful" values. This hand is a little bit soft for another bid, but it also has no wasted value. The number of total tricks is roughly 19, looks promising for a 5 level contract. I 'd bid 5D if partner knows heart is the anchor suit in this case.

Why couldn't it be a running suit, asking for club stopper?

1NT, roughly showing 19 HCP. 1. It's the most descriptive bid. I always prefer descriptive ones to speculative ones. 2. Suppose LHO is not insane, looking for a penalty double is against the odds. the expectation is opps have 7 cards in spades, so if you can beat 1S by 2 tricks, you making 3NT. It's highly unlikely you can beat 1S by 3 tricks. 3. Given your spade holding, partner probably does not have a comfortable pass even when it's the right choice. IMO, put parnter on test too often is not a good idea. 4. Defend with too much value concentrated in one hand, you are going to be tortured. 5. Position-wise, RHO is the last one to say after a penalty pass, he might run to 2C or 2H. Then it would be much harder to make an informed decision because you didn't bid the descriptive 1NT. 6. Worst case, suppose LHO IS insane, and you could have beaten 1S a million, you still have the field protection, because you are not in nuthouse and no one else would overcall 1S.

where to find complete notes for this convention, thanks

GIB could play better?
arrows replied to arrows's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
It is reported that GIB's card play is "much worse" if the sample size reduced from 100 to 50... Maybe more than 200 is expensive and unnecessary, but less than 100, I guess it's not enough for GIB to make an "intelligent" choice.. -
GIB could play better?
arrows replied to arrows's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
As I understand, GIB choose what card to play based on the result of monte carlo simulation. I think there's parameter, the size of sample space, setting how many random hands GIB should analysis before making its play. What is the size of the sample space right now? is it possible to set the sample space larger? say greater than 100? -
As far as I know, GIB finished the 12th in the par contest 1998, in Lille, France. That's 8 years ago. Tried a few session of money bridge, but the GIBs I messed with at BBO are clearly not of this calibre. I have a couple of questions: 1. Is the GIB running on BBO server a full-featured one? 2. What is the setting of the sample space? Would it be possible to use larger sample space setting? Thanks

funny. if you don't claim the LAW is better than experts, who will buy your book? When everyone is talking about the LAW, Nobody would want another book named "I follow the law" if you don't claim the LAW is totally unreliable, How can you sell your book? it's nothing else, but marketing gimmick.

how GIB works and how to exploit its power and its weakness too. And it could be a promotion force for GIB money bridge too. more people talk about it, more people will try, make sense?
-
would love to see it.

I vote Germany vs Brazil traditionally, a strong host always makes to the final.
-
it's neither, it's economic. You are worried about sky fallen. we have a problem because the oil price is not high enough so that no enough incentive for people to search substitute. layback, relax, and playing brige:) let the nature of mankind takes it course.

Overcall two hearts. even with 1543, I still overcall two hearts. I feel it is usually helpful to just overcall a 5 card major instead of double. You are not expecting partner bid heart first with 3 hearts, aren't you? if the emaciated spot cards make you nervous, think about this: the best way to score spot cards is letting them be trumps. Usually, it is not the weak suit, but the perspective of having a fit worries me most. However, any concern of misfit is just far too remote at this point.

It's impossible now, they will probably meet in the quarter final.

Final: Germany vs Argentina
-
nobody to address the 2nd question? that's more important, IMO. What does Pass, double, 6C or 5NT show here?
-
I had a nasty problem in a team game, both red holding: ♠ K82 ♥ QJ8 ♦ 42 ♣ AJ932 RHO opens a first seat 2♠ weak two, you pass, LHO leaps to 4♠, and your partner comes in with 5♣, RHO continues with 5♠, 1. What do you bid now? 2. What agreement do you have in your partnership in this kind of situation.
-
maybe give the player a choice when his/her bot's going to be the declarer, "Do you wanna be the declarer?"
-
add more levels: Galaxy class Universe class Holy God just my 2 cents.
-
When declarer concede all tricks, Is it really necessary to get approvement from defenders? If not, it will speed the game up quite a bit.

3♣, What's the problem? If we belong to ♣, this is right on the track. Need at least a filler in ♥ to play 4♥, if that is the case, partner will support ♥ after 3♣. Had he got a 13(45) shape, he should have raised ♥ earlier, therefore Hx and some extra is sufficient for a 3♥ rebid.
