  1. We were actually playing 5 card majors, hence my error in putting it in here. Playing 1H:2D, 2H is detrimental to your part-score bidding and decisions between part-score and game. Obviously we lose out heavily in the slam zone. Currently we play 1H:2D, 2N as 17-20 bal, maybe I should look at it including some of the hands that we currently rebid 3H on.
  2. In our methods a 2♥ rebid would be NF MikeH, sorry ;) It is fairly standard over here to play a new suit as a cue there, although it obviously creates difficulties on this hand.
  3. [hv=d=n&v=n&s=sahtdakqt73cqjt74]133|100|Scoring: IMP 1♥:2♦ 3♥:? 2♦ was 10+, F1; 3♥ is a GF single suiter. 4♣ now would be a cue, 4♦ nat forcing. What's your call?[/hv]
  4. Seem to remember Klinger doing something similar but putting 14-16 single suiters into the 1C opener, not quite sure how that would work. Not sure if the considerations for 10-16 openers are the same as for 9-14.
  5. 1. 3NT - invite seldom, accept often 2. Hmm, how many clubs is pard likely to have on this auction? 3♥, maybe pard will bid 3NT on ♠Qx :P 3. I'll invite 4. 2♦ - finally, an easy one! 5. Double 6. This one is evil. 5♠ 7. 5♦ - it is probably their hand, they know nothing about their pards shape yet, I don't want to give them any more info.
  6. BTW, the reason I pass initially is so that they have little chance to get out in 4♦, if I double then a pass sounds like "pick a major" and 4♦ sounds natural.
  7. Pard has shown a weakish offensive hand by pulling the XX, seems right to compete to 3♦ (and hope pard hasn't made an *ahem* light opening bid!)
  8. 2NT for me, I considered 3C and 1D.
  9. I'd have bid 1NT - I can happily pass partner's next call, and if he makes 1♠ in a 5-1 fit we probably had a better scoring partial in his 2nd suit. Now I pass.
  10. Lol, so everyone so far is agreed that you should double precisely once  Doubling 1♥ seems obvious. I'll double 2♦ too, we've got nowhere to go and I want +200.
  11. Oh yeah... I ask about 4♣ then pass, and bid 5♣ over 4♦.
  12. Good points Matt. Also, if the opponents do not alert you should be able to assume that their call is natural. Having said this, most opps don't seem to appreciate an alert followed by an explanation of no agreement, but this is probably just cos they want to know what my pard has
  13. Limey, think I've just realised what you were going for with your line - was the paper+pencil any help?!
  14. Rebound - I think your first line only gives you three diamond tricks, leaving you one short. Kalvan - I basically followed your line except I missed the chance for a squeeze. I think the right line is - win T2 with the diamond queen ace of clubs club ruff trump throwing a *SPADE* Now if diamonds are 4-2 on the left, I have to play the 4th trump and trust the jack of hearts will fall, that is very slightly worse than the 3-3 spade break would have been (35.5% a priori, both a bit better after trumps have broken). Actually RHO had xxxx Jxxx Axx xx and I could - should - have ruffed out the heart.
  15. Didn't want to mention the bidding :) But here goes... 1♦:1♥ 1NT:4♠ 6♣:6♦ P 1NT showed both minors with longer diamonds, 4♠ was obviously intended as natural (pard sighed just after bidding, he knew the meaning of 1NT but had a brain freeze) but slowly alerted as a splinter. Not sure if this might have faced an adjustment had I made it. That's an interesting point. Am I allowed to base the play on the affect that my partner's mannerisms may have had on the opponents? I guess not...but it is AI that he has misbid...hmm :(
  16. Indeed - might be better to switch all the calls from 2H upwards with 2C:2D, 2H so single suiters can show themselves immediately.
  17. [hv=d=s&v=n&n=skqxxhkqt98dqjxcx&s=saxxhadktxxcajxxx]133|200|Scoring: IMP Contract 6♦ T1:♦-xQAx T2:♦-x[/hv] Have just lost in the first round of a k/o, making this would have been enough to win it. If it is any help, you are feeling quite lucky - you got to this not-too-shabby contract through a total misunderstanding :) If you don't mind, please say whether you think you would have found your line at the table.
  18. I think using 2♣ for the minors is a non-starter - most of the time you'll just push the opps into a major, there's no room to ask pard which of his suits is longer and the frequency isn't great for your cheapest bid.
  19. One of my pard's has the book, he said that it didn't mention submarine splinters. Sounds from that article like it is designed for an otherwise regular response structure, which makes sense - there isn't enough room for all the Keri 2C hand-types after 1N:2C, 2S.
  20. Sorry, am struggling to remember the auctions on 8 and 9 - I think they ended up in 3NT and 4♥ respectively, but I may be wrong. Board 1 we were indeed overcalled, although I feel responder promising 5 diamonds would have kept some pairs out :)
  21. Yeah I'm not too fond of mine either. 1♣:1♥ 1♠:2♦ 2♥:3♦ 3♥:6♦ 1♣ short, 1♥ 4+ spades 1♠ 11-13 bal, 2♦ artificial GF 2♥ nat, 3♦ presumably nat 3♥ no idea, 6♦ punt! I should have rebid 3♦, then everything is much simpler.
  22. 1♠:1N for us. North is about a point shy of a 2♥ response, which would have fetched a single raise.
  23. 1♥:1♠ 1N:2♣ 2♦:2♠ 3N Oops...1N was 11-13, pard got a little aggressive showing an invite with 5 spades. IMO 2♠ is clear on his hand, you'd have to play pretty warped 1NT rebids before I'd pass 1NT on this.
