Not quite: Thinking of the alledged codes in terms of Lewis signalling games is probably useless unless the pairs would have been able to play such games unwittingly while focusing on proper bridge. But "task-irrelevant perceptual learning" (e.g. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2764800/) seems to be fairly well documented, and I don't see why it couldn't apply here, so maybe that's the extra idea needed to explain how a pair can inadvertently evolve an illegal signalling system. (I'm speculating wildly, of course, but perhaps a little less than when I wrote upthread.) Csaba, I saw your post in the "Introductions and the like" forum today, so I don't expect a reply from you anytime soon. Good luck! 1 which I knew absolutely nothing about until yesterday

So you let them play 2♣ in their 8-card fit?

You're apparently living in New Zealand, so why do you play F1N? There's a very good reason why F1N should be more common in the ACBL than elsewhere: the GCC doesn't allow pairs to play 1M-2♣ as "nat. or Drury" or "nat., bal. or Drury", so apparently the 3c limit raise in has to be included in 1N, potentially burying a 5-3 M fit unless 1N is F1, or in 2N, 3x(x<M) or 3M, committing the partnership to at least 3M.

1N. (Yes, I know I'm supposed to double.) -
A very literal translation: "Offensive convention: Mancoff (Manco) Origin: Manco was created in the late 60s by Mats Nilsland and Dag Hermelin, and has after minor changes and a suggestion by Göran Ofsén been improved to the more modern variation, Mancoff. Created date: Approximately 1973 Purpose: The purpose of Manco and Mancoff is to exploit the opponents's double of a stopper ask and cuebid. Description Manco applies when the bidding is at the 2- or 3-level and the opponents make a double of a stopper ask (often a cuebid or fourth suit). For example, [auction1] or [auction2] Responses In this type of situations a number of rules apply for what the different calls show: Notrump bids show a double stopper (or sufficiently solid stopper under the circumstances) RD shows xx/xxx (two or three spot cards in the doubled suit) An active call shows a singleton in the doubled suit Pass shows a single stopper or a half stopper in the suit Cuebid (raise) shows a void in the suit After the pass, which can be a single stopper or a double stopper (Qx, Jxx), partner can often decide what shall be played. If he wants to know more exactly, for example whether he is missing a half stopper himself, he can call RD, which asks for 3NT with a half stopper. Variations: Manco is an earlier variant, where the meaning of RD and active calls were interchanged. (RD showed singleton.) Links: Version & date: 1 - 2001-12-16 Described by: Mats Nilsland"

I play a (vaguely 2/1-based) system where * 1M openings are very wide-ranging (rules of 19-30, or "10-21") * all 2-openings are weak (except for some discreetly inserted GF hand types), but there's nothing resembling a "15-17 gap" over 1♥-1♠(5+, 4+ S) or 1M-1N(5-12, NF) . For example, with 2542 opposite 10 hcp, 4234 (as in the 'simple bidding situation?' thread), the bidding could go either 1♥-1♠ (rules of 19-30, 5+ H, unbal. \\ 5+, 4+ S) 1N-2♦ (rules of 19-21, 3-S5H4+m / rules of 25-27, any \\ 8+, relay) 2♥-P (rules of 19-21, 2-S5H4+m \\ ---), 1♥-1♠ (rules of 19-30, 5+ H, unbal. \\ 5+, 4+ S) 2♣-2♥ (rules of 22-24, 3-S5H4+m \\ to play opposite 2- S, pref. opposite 5H4D) P(2- S), 1♥-1♠ (rules of 19-30, 5+ H, unbal. \\ 5+, 4+ S) 1N-2♦ (rules of 19-21, 3-S5H4+m / rules of 25-27, any \\ 8+, relay) 3♣-3♦ (rules of 25-27, 3-S4+D, not 5H5D \\ relay) 3♥-3♠ (2542 or 6H4D \\ relay, suggesting 2 H) 3N-P (2542 (hence 16-18 hcp) \\ ---) or 1♥-1♠ (rules of 19-30, 5+ H, unbal. \\ 5+, 4+ S) 3♣-3♦ (rules of 28-30, 3-S4+D, not 5H5D \\ relay) 3♥-3♠ (2542 or 6H4D \\ relay, suggesting 2 H) 3N-P (2542 (hence 19-21 hcp) \\ ---).

Maybe 1st seat NV (vs. V): P = "0-10" (rules of 7-18), unsuitable for 2♣+, guaranteeing 2+D2+C [0 dots] 1♣ = "10-15" (rules of 9-24), unbal. and either 4-S4-H or 5M6+m / 14-16 bal. [3 dots] 1♦ = "16+" (rule of 25+), unbal. / 17+, bal. [0 dots] 1M = "10-15" (rules of 19-24), 5+ M, unbal., no longer side suit [0 dots] 1N = "11-13" (rules of 19-21 if semibal.) [0 dots] 2♣ = Multi: "0-9" (rules of 9-18), either 6M3-OM or 5M3-OM4+m [3 dots] 2♦ = Ekren: "0-10" (rules of 8-18), 4+S4+H [1 dot] 2♥ = Velociraptor: "0-9" (rules of 9-18), 3-S4H5+m [0 dots] 2♠ = Velociraptor: "0-9" (rules of 9-18), 4S3-H5+m [0 dots] 2N = 23-25 bal. [0 dots] 3♣+ = NAT, modern aggresive style1 [0 dots] 2nd seat NV (vs. V): Same as in 1st seat except that * Pass doesn't promise 2+D2+C * preempts start at "4" (rule of 15). 3rd seat NV (vs. V): Same as in 1st seat except that * Pass doesn't promise 2+D2+C * 1N is "14-16" while 1♣ is opened with "11-13" (bal./semibal.) * the upper point limit for preempts is "12" (rule of 21), which in turn affects the 1♣ and 1M openings. I think your 1♣ opening looks good btw. Because the range is so narrow (13-15), you don't need 2N by Opener as Good/bad and can therfore use it as "two places to play", which solves what I think is one of the main problems with my 1♣ structure: how to bid 9-14 hands with 5D5C in competition. 1 But opening 3m is mandatory with 0-9, 6m1Om33 (or skewer) in order for Pass to promise 2+D2+C. -

I want to play.

As someone who prefers to "pass or bash" opposite a tight 3-point NT range (here: 12-14), I'm wondering if the 1N, 2♣, 2♦, 2N, 3♣ and 3♦ responses to 1♣ can be condensed into one, namely 1N.

Freeing up the 2♦ opening should be easy after dropping the requirement that 1♦ shows 2+ D. My example system was designed to emulate 1♣-1♥+ in 1993 Viking Club. You're right about auctions starting 1♣-1♦; 1♥-1♠, of course, but I deliberatly included just enough rebid structure over 1♣-1♦ to carry out the emulation. In reality, there's no reason why Opener should relay on all 16+ hands, or even why 1♥ needs to be a pure relay instead of, say, "hearts or strong" (as in IMprecision). Being able to stop in 1M is nice, but winning the race to 1N can also be nice, so I'm not sure how to evaluate the loss of natural (3+) 1M rebids. I agree, but I also think it's also somewhat "unfair" to make this point. To make an analogy: One of the big advantages of the limited 1M openings in Precision is that Advancer is kept in the dark about the nature of Responder's M support over (1M)-P-(4M), and only pedants will make the point that after 1M-(P)-4M-(bid) or 1M-(P)-4M-(bid) P-(P), it's actually the Precision pair that are at a disadvantage. Similarly, one of the advantages of Swedish Club compared with Precsion is supposed to be that auctions like 1♣-(2♠)-P-(P) are less likely to occur. But when they occur and Opener has a strong hand, it's no doubt the pair playing Swedish Club that are at a disadvantage. I think you're right, judging from what I've seen on Vugraph. So the point I made in the previous paragraph has to be modified accordingly.
-
Also interesting. But how do you find 4-4 major fits when, say, Opener has 11-13 and Responder 8-11? Maybe it's not that important when also Responder is balanced?

I already play 1♣ as nat. or bal., F1, but in order to handle the 0+ responses I play two "Gazzillis" over 1♣-[1M-1](=0+, 4+ M), 1N = rules of 19-21 (~10-12 hcp), 3-S2-M6+C / rules of 25-27 (~16-18 hcp), 3-S2-M / 17-19 bal., 2-3 M [NF, hence "NF Gazzilli"] 2♦ = rules of 28-30 (~19-21 hcp), any unbal. [also known as a "Multireverse", I know], as well as 1♣-[1M-1]; 2N+ = rule of 31+ (~22+ hcp), relay structure. Edit: Deleted nonsense about 1♦ also being nat. or bal., F1. (I play 1♦ as nat., unbal., F1. and play two "Gazzilis" (1N and 2♣) also over 1♦-1M.)

Thanks for the link! The notes look vaguely familiar, so I might have read them. That they're in Swedish is definitely not a problem, as I can understand 100 %. (Not sure I can write perfect Swedish, though. Would probably look like "svorsk" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svorsk).) The reason for removing all balanced minima with 4 H from the 1♣ opening seems to be the same in Bergamo as in the versions of Swedish Club I've been toying with: to enable transfer responses to 1♣. However, while Bergamo uses the 1♦ response more or less as in Polish Club, I've always used it as "hearts or negative". (I'll explain why in a later post.)
