a way to bid strong NT with 5M
nullve replied to Frank_lol_'s topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
So 12-15 is not a NT opening range. -
Are you sure the auction didn't go [hv=pc=n&s=sa63haq4dakj653c4&n=sk854h72dqcakqj52&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1dp2cp2dp2sp2np3cp3dp3np4np6nppp]266|200[/hv] ?

And then 5 hcp with the same shape: [hv=https://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer.html?lin=st||pn|~~M4589luq,nullve,~~M6365hgk,nullve|md|1S63HAKQT2D53CAJ98,SAJ4H875DKT42CT72,SQT987HJ94DQ98C43,SK52H63DAJ76CKQ65|sv|e|rh||ah|Board%2019|mb|1H|an|Major%20suit%20opening%20--%205+%20!H;%2011-21%20HCP;%2012-22%20total%20points%20|mb|P|mb|1S|an|One%20over%20one%20--%204+%20!S;%206+%20total%20points%20|mb|P|mb|2C|an|Opener%20two%20rebid%20--%204+%20!C;%204-%20!D;%205+%20!H;%203-%20!S;%2011-16%20HCP;%2012-18%20total%20points%20|mb|P|mb|2H|an|2+%20!H;%204+%20!S;%206-9%20total%20points%20|mb|P|mb|P|mb|P|pc|H5|pc|H4|pc|H3|pc|HA|pc|S3|mc|1|]400|300[/hv]

Robots (basic? advanced?) are free today: [hv=https://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer.html?lin=st||pn|~~M4589luq,nullve,~~M6365hgk,nullve|md|1S65HAK752DK4CKJ72,SA43HJ8DJ652CAT65,SQT987HT94DQ98CQ3,SKJ2HQ63DAT73C984|sv|o|rh||ah|Board%2011|mb|1H|an|Major%20suit%20opening%20--%205+%20!H;%2011-21%20HCP;%2012-22%20total%20points%20|mb|P|mb|1S|an|One%20over%20one%20--%204+%20!S;%206+%20total%20points%20|mb|P|mb|2C|an|Opener%20two%20rebid%20--%204+%20!C;%204-%20!D;%205+%20!H;%203-%20!S;%2011-16%20HCP;%2012-18%20total%20points%20|mb|P|mb|2H|an|2+%20!H;%204+%20!S;%206-9%20total%20points%20|mb|P|mb|P|mb|P|pc|D2|pc|DQ|pc|DA|pc|D4|mc|12|]400|300[/hv] Note that 1♥-1♠; 2♣-2♥ = "2+ ♥; 4+ ♠; 6-9 total points" in this robot's system. Giving North a slightly better hand: [hv=https://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer.html?lin=st||pn|~~M4589luq,nullve,~~M6365hgk,nullve|md|1SA3HQ8763DJ6CAK84,SKJ542HAKDAT4CJT2,SQT987HJ94DQ98CQ3,S6HT52DK7532C9765|sv|n|rh||ah|Board%2015|mb|1H|an|Major%20suit%20opening%20--%205+%20!H;%2011-21%20HCP;%2012-22%20total%20points%20|mb|P|mb|2H|an|Simple%20raise%20--%203+%20!H;%207-10%20total%20points%20|mb|P|mb|P|mb|P|pc|HA|pc|H9|pc|H2|pc|H3|mc|12|]400|300[/hv] So 1♥-2♥ = "Simple raise -- 3+ ♥; 7-10 total points".
-
From the Kokish-Kraft notes: 1♥-1♠ = "4+S, could be extremely light" 1♥-1N = "Semi-forcing, maximum 12 HCP; opener can pass if BAL, with no game in sight (rare)" 1♥-2♥ = "Not a terrible raise" 1♥-1♠; 2m-2♥ = "NF: most often two-card support; if three, then very weak hand"
-
Not to me, either!
-
Yes, but total points, not hcp. (Very important!) In standard 2/1, 1M-1N; 2m-2M and 1♠-1N; 2♥-2♠ is either (possibly false) preference with doubleton support (and ~ 5-9 hcp) OR something like 5-7 total points with 3c support. Over this, Opener bids exactly as he would if Responder's rebid had denied 3c support. It's obviously possible to play 1♥-1♠; 2m-2♥ the same way.

You could play Mulberry, e.g 4♣ = puppet to 4♦ ...4♦ = forced ......4♥/4♠/4N/5♣ = key card asks in C/D/H/S, resp. 4♦ = stop signal 4M/5m = natural slam tries (NF) 4N = quantitative . Or borrow from Zelandakh (as I do in situations like this) and play 4♣ = puppet to 4♦ ...4♦ = forced ......4♥/4♠/4N = key card asks in D/H/S, resp. 4♦ = key card ask in C 4M/5m = to play 4N = quantitative, since Opener's approximate strength is known, making the natural 4M/5m slam tries practically redundant.

So Multi 2♦ is an exception to being a Brown Sticker. There is no exception for a Multi 2♥ opening (called 'Major Flash' by Chris Ryall) as long as the bid can be made with 9 hcp or less. The policy seems to allow 2♥ as Multi with 10-13 hcp instead of Weak Two strength.

2/1 non forcing 1nt
nullve replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
In a 2/1 context, both 'non-forcing' and 'semi-forcing' are used to describe a wide-ranging 1N response to 1M. It's easy to find examples from top level bridge where 'semi-forcing' is used even if 1N doesn't include a 3c limit raise, but I'm not sure I've seen 'non-forcing' being used if it does. -

Hehe, thanks. A solution I'm quite happy with is -
2/1 non forcing 1nt
nullve replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
This is also the case in a typical 2/1 system where 1M-1N is described as 'non-forcing'. At least in Europe. -

2/1 non forcing 1nt
nullve replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Yes, although I believe both pairs, as well as most top Italian pairs, play systems based on Garozzo's 2/1-like Ambra system where 2♣ can alternatively be described as "GF NAT or BAL or FIT", to borrow from P-Z. -

Convention cards for the pairs playing 2/1-like systems in the 2022 Bermuda Bowl Final: Brink-Drijver (for Switzerland) Gawrys-Klukowski (for Switzerland) Piedra-Zimmermann (for Switzerland) vandenBos-vanLankveld (for the Netherlands) As you can see * B-D, G-K and vdB-vL played 1M-1N as NF, P-Z as "NAT"; * B-D and vdB-vL played 1M-2♣ as "GF relay", G-K as "F1, semi nat", P-Z as "GF NAT or BAL or FIT"; * B-D and vdB-vL played Gazzilli over 1M-1N. -
Unlucky or poor judgement?
nullve replied to AL78's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
East didn't overcall and was therefore the opponent most likely to have 3 hearts. -
I would be able to reuse my usual relay structures after e.g. 1♣-1♥; 2♦-2♥; 2♠(relay)-?: 2N = BAL, not 3433 3♣ = 5+ C 3♦ = 1444 or 3433 3♥+ = 5+ D . (In more detail: ) Besides, if the a) in is precisely hands that would raise a 1♥ response to 2♥ in Dutch Doubleton, then you could also just turn 1♣-1♥; 2♦-2♥; 2♠+ into a better version of 2♦-2♥; 2♠+ in Benji/SEF. Better, because Responder has already shown ~ 8-11 and either 4H3-S or 5H(332) and 1♣-1♥; 2♦-2♥; 3♥ would not be the problem sequence that 2♦-2♥; 3♥ is in Benji/SEF.

Multi 2D - how do you play a 2M opening?
nullve replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Yes, it's called 'Velociraptor'. In one partnership I played 2♣ = Multi 2♦-like (with 6M3-OM or 5M4+m3-OM) or GF with primary hearts 2♦ = Ekren (with 4+S4+H) or GF with primary spades 2M = Velociraptor (with 4M5+m3-OM) . -

Yes, (2♦)-X-(P)-P (P) and (2♦)-X-(P)-2♠ (P), for example if Overcaller: 14 hcp and 2434 Advancer: 6 hcp and a) 5+ S b) 4324

WBF rules (WBF Systems Policy) Here is a convention card from the 2022 Bermuda Bowl. The NV 2♦ opening is described as "5/6cM, 3-8 hcp" If that's a Brown Sticker convention (say, because the weak option is not hands that would open a tradional Weak 2M), the CC should have a Brown Sticker attached to it. It doesn't, so I conclude again that it's not a Brown Sticker convention. I bet the Garbage Multi I defined above is not significantly different from what they actually play except for the range. Despite some Burn's law violations or worse?
-
If someone say they play "undisciplined Weak Twos", can they really play something deserving the name 'Weak 2M' if they open 2M only if they have either 6M3-OM, 5M4+m3-OM or 5M(332)? If the answer is Yes, why is the above Garbage Multi a Brown Sticker? Btw, Brown Sticker conventions are not generally allowed in Norway. The above Garbage Multi is, rightly or wrongly.
