  1. Last night I was kibbing a friend. When the tables moved I was still looking at the movie to see if some variant play would work out better. When I looked at the table again, my friend was away, and a new EW were still busy in their Portuguese conversation. The other pair demanded rather sharp to stop it, they did it right away, apologised, and said they asked about each others family. (Which was highly probable seeing names in the text). The other pair did not graciously accept the apology, but added " In a tournament?" (Why not, if game is over and you wait to move) and "Is that (-me-) your kibber too?". I really got mad than, but was as kibber mute. I changed my flag from Dutch to Portuguese (just to annoy the other pair, I must confess), and sent mail to the player who made the remark, telling him that kibitzers are humans too. Sorry long story, but what really annoys me is the suspicion against kibbing. Is my impression true that North American players are more prone to these fears? Can we start a Pro Kibitzers Rights campaign? Why not allow table chat from kibitzers after all hands are played?
  2. Playing with an expert you get that rocking chair feeling... bridge is easy... In defense, they seem to know yr hand... give the right signals, make winning leads; in bidding they make life easy for you too, never a riddle but paving the way for you. Being dummy you see the initial thinking and the smoorth play. Being the leader you play better because you dont want to be sloppy, counting all the time, cards and tricks;-)
  3. Maybe you might guess I am a fan of SJ Simon. What you forgot to say that it is very well written, one of the reasons it is a classic. Of course the bidding is old fashioned. Try reading the blue book...
  4. Today my p did a striped tail ape double, but our opponents succesfully riposted with a redouble and scored +1880 for 4spxx+2. Can anyobe tell me the origin of the striped tail ape double's name? [hv=n=s54hqt76dat82ck98&w=sa876hak852d7543c&e=s9hj943dkq96ct432&s=skqjt32hdjcaqj765]399|300|[/hv]
  5. Frequently omitted is also the carding and suit preference signals. Quite essential
  6. Doe anyone know since when the term kibitzers is used for "bridge-watchers"? And what si the origin?
  7. wow... I alwayd read your posts with the utmost reverence...
  8. OK if it was serious tournament with real money prizes adjustments sh be made, if not so a drink for every player present would do the trick. And never yield to temptation anymore...
  9. A button that would get red when a TD is called, saves the TD irritating pop ups, and saves the table typing TD called (what nobody ever does, except me), and saves remarks like: one call per table suffices. OK it is a luxury gadget
  10. Am I missing something? Where is the third club in dummy? With 2 clubs in dummy he can only make 2 finesses imho
  11. In my view the main issue is that the one opp alerted and explained the bid of the other opp on the table chat. That is forbidden, we have the self alert and the explanations only to opps. I would pardon the opps only if it was their first appearance at BBO, otherwise they should know better.
  12. Maybe 5$ is reasonable for a lot of work, but if you play one each week you are paying 250$ a year. The dutch bridgesite for instance charges 30$ a year. With all the payed tournaments now the costs for BBO do increase far beyond that amount. On the one hand I think Fred, Uday and all others should be payed for their work. But i rather would pay 30-50$ a year to BBO than to these wildgrows of various tournaments. For players of some countries with fewer possibilities, also of electronic payment, a free bridgesite would be great and the only opportunity On the other hand, before the start of the payed tournaments BBO was more fun, with the general feeling among TDs to give back free for what they got free.
  13. Thxs Gerben. It looks a lot the same as multidefense, what my p and I actually play against NT opening opps.
  14. please, what is suction? In holland we use it for a way to pester opps in a slow way, so they gat mad. I do not think this is meant here;-)
  15. It was great to be virtually present there. Trying to follow the italian comments was good for my italian but made me very depressive, especially in the segments were the Dutch team did badly. Switchin to the other room helped in such cases. Thks BBO. Grazie BBO!
  16. I am very happy that persons who make rude remarks as this one did (with apparently much more on his record) get banned And I think there is no other way to do it with respect for someone's privacy: should we need a public advertisement of someone's faults?
  17. Well, it is not perfect, but it is much quicker and up to date than the official site. I look at it a few times a day (Maybe also because The Netherlands is doing fine all over;-). Anyway it is an improvement.
  18. It will get better after some time, whwn you have found players with whom you like to play and vv. Stick out for a while, make players you like friends, add in free text why, and next time ask someone who you have marked as friend.
  19. I do not know why this TD runs these tournaments, most times TD's run "no adjustments" tournaments so they can play themself. Unclocked tournaments are hazardous to develop into a total mess, especially with a playing TD. The solution is not to enlist in these tournaments. The discussion had been held here on the forum recently whether or not these tournaments should be allowed, and the general conclusion is they can, for a small number of players.
  20. What about 1♦-pass-pass-1♠? If p can manage a reply, you can give it another push.
  21. Firstly, if I play with someone who calls himself an expert I dont care as this doesnt mean anything. When I play with someone I rate to be an expert i do my utmost best and play much better than normally, counting frenzylike and so on, because i do not want to make silly mistakes, and I hope the expert will play another time with me. When I play with experts who are anonymous, I give them a heart;-) (I had the privilege to play 2 hands with Smispi in an indy - did I know - and he still carries a heart with the text: this man CAN play). By the way I rated myself down from advanced to intermediate, this shows a lot of profit won by sloppy defense of opps who despise you. I seriously consider to move on to novice.
  22. In my view 3NT is made always, 2 clubs if opps lead them. 2 diamonds, 4 spades, 2 hearts . You have a 50% to finesse !HJ the right way fotr the 10th. So I see no reason to adjust whatsoever, The no-alert is another small question, I would give EW a reminder to alert.
  23. I was running a tournament, one table did not finish b6, i remained at the table to adjust but instead of board 6 I type b7., 3DS=. Inmediately on the table where the player whose board I wanted to adjust, the board 7, which is hardly bid, is adjusted to 3D= by S.. and next hand is started. I could of course still adjust b6, but i could not cancel the silly result on b7. I readjusted to A==. Besides to take better care, is there a solution to cancel an adjustment, and to let the players bid and play it again?
  24. Waiting until people ask for their partner to be subbed can cause considerable delay. If I have nothing else to do and I see one person red I go to the table, look at the time resting, ask if a sub is needed, and if so try to match as suitable a sub as possible. If it is terrible busy and half of the tournament is disconnecting I sub everything red in sight without any questions asked or any matching done. Most of the time I compromise something between these extremes. I only sub someone back if the sub is becoming red, of if I know the sub well and can ask him/her if its ok.
