  1. Hello peculiar how different our experiences are. a) I cannot remember to have seen a beginner leave a Club due of a psyche. This since - psychs are extremly rare. - Sometimes they don't even get it. - They bid their hand without giving a thought about opponents bids. b) I remember many beginners being stunned due of ferocious attacks by those 20+ years customer that consider a deviation bid/hand a mortal sin. Do I think that b) is a natural extension of the supported view about "nop pychs"? Yes I do. ciao stefan germany
  2. No Problems at all, got for instance the June 2009 issue about eight-ten days ago. ciao stefan germany
  3. ich würde mir lieber die Freiheit erhalten selbst zu entscheiden ob ich ans Telefon gehe oder nicht und dies ohne mich dafür auch noch entschuldigen / erklären zu müssen :-) ciao stefan
  4. that's boring and you hardly get good video material. Put at use those F22 and mininukes, alternatively it would be fun to see again MOAB in action, on hijacketed ships. It will give us some more beautiful films about precision bombing. A plain solution that every TV consumer will understand. As Helen said, we do not need talking we need action, hasta la vista baby
  5. Hallo, in an interclub match we are going to face opponents that play Polish Club and I was wondering if our team could optimize the defense against their Two Suiter openings. Pair A 2♣ = 5-11 hcp, two-suits, 5+ - 5+, ♥ + any 2♦ = 5-11 hcp, two-suits, 5+ - 5+, ♠ + minor Pair B 2♥ = 6-10 hcp, 5♥ + 5 any 2♠ = 6-10 hcp, 5♠ + 5 minor Any suggestions? Thank you, stefan germany
  6. I wonder if this is true. I play at BBO having often to use a slow mobile phone modem. Using the BBO-Flash it takes about 5 minutes to get the log-in form, and after logging in, it takes about 30 seconds to get the (in german wrong spelled "Verbindung verbrochen") message "connection aborted". Using the BBO-Win client it takes me from 1 to 4 minutes (depending how many players are logged in) to be at a table and to play smoothly. ciao stefan germany
  7. Hello, just curiosity. At the time some concerns were expressed about the financial consequences for the involved players. I am happy to hear that nothing of that sort happend. I had no idea that I stepped in a "Don't mention the war!" episode, ciao stefan
  8. Hello, I don't know what has bitten you. I was just curiose about the bridge circus at the NABC. And it was not on the front page of the newspaper that is something dirty to talk about the sponsors in Bridge. Do we need a peeeeeeeeeep when we talk about the Nickell Team in future? imo your answer is truly off base. Thank you to all the others for the answers, ciao stefan
  9. allow me to add another question d) are such anonymus sponsors common? with best regards stefan germany
  10. Hello, having a look at the bulletins I noticed, as german, that Auken-von Armin finished third in the Reisinger BAM with Debbie and Michael Rosenberg as teammates. I am wondering about: a) Aren't those four players all professionals? b) Who is the sponsor in the team Auken-von Arnim / Debbie+Michael Rosenberg? c) Since some time is gone since Shanghai 2007: Are the players involved in the "Affair" (on of them Debbie R.) facing negative consequences on the buisness level as professional bridge players? with best regards stefan germany

    Vista?

Hello, I jumped from windows 95 to Vista so I cannot compare it to XP. What I hate the most at Vista is the downright telling you lies about the structure of your folders. One mess that you will not encounter is about language adaption, where depending on what program you use some folders are inexistent or have a different name. But let us talk about BBO. If you use the BBO windows client you can choose "open bridge movie from your computer". There you get the impression that you are looking into the folder C:\Program Files\Bridge Base Online\hands\ (ok here in germany it would be the fake folder "programme" that in reality is a link to the real folder "programm files") The truth is that you get at the same time to see the lin fies in C:\Program Files\Bridge Base Online\hands\ and! c:\Users\stefan\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Bridge Base Online\hands\ as if they are in one. Now if you want to open a lin file for instance with the double dummy solver you have to guess where the files are and face the fact the AppData folder is a hidden folder that you will not see. And so on. No I am not happy with Vista, ciao stefan
  12. seems the time is come to read a little bit about "liberation theology" in south america :-)
  13. Hello, on blml they are trying to gather the facts. A fair recap of an email of Michael Gromöller can be found at http://www.amsterdamned.org/pipermail/blml...ber/043859.html The position of Ton Kooyman ( I don't know bout his function at the venue) in answer to a not perfect recap by another poster can be found at http://www.amsterdamned.org/pipermail/blml...ber/043841.html of course you can read and follow the whole discussion in the archives of http://www.amsterdamned.org/mailman/listinfo/blml (go to november 2008 sorted by date) It seems likely that Michael Gromöller will post there too in the near fture, ciao stefan
  14. Hello, I would like to say that Mr Wald has my unconditional support. When I stated about "Mr Wald style" I was referring to the fact that I have the impression that he does not do/state things by halves when he feels strong about a matter. Maybe sometimes he even goes over the top. From that I cannot deduce any anti german feeling, only that he is human. Worse things, than being human, have been done on earth. As a man with backbone he apologized for pulling a boner. I suggest to go back to bridge and to be grateful for the great amount of work that he puts in it. I am. ciao stefan germany
  15. We just saw one of the worst accusation in this forum and he should keep cool? Maybe he was not aware that there is nothing new about the style of Mr Wald. My resume is that I learnt much more about the posters here than about the conceding pair. Congratulations to both english Teams, a nice surprise. ciao stefan germany
  16. Since I can't count it does not baffle me that I can't read. So as you say we have the believes of posters. We have the perceptions of the posters. Wow that's hard data :-) to refuse an hypothesis I have no reason to doubt that the deals are random, I do not care if they are not are not random, even: give me pls an option at the table to get wild deals. To not say that it totally suffices to me that Fred says that it is so. I just wanted to point to the fact that it is a matter of faith in the makers of this software, but not more.
  17. Hello, Ok now we know that hand dealt hands are not what they should be from a statistical point of view. But the original question, does bbo tweak the hands to make them more exciting, hasn't got an answer or did I miss something? To take it to an extreme: I say that every 100th flat hand is suppressed by the software to make the game more exciting. I can't find anything in the answers I have read that would reassure me that the statement above is not true. ciao stefan germany
  18. Hello, 1) Comparison use/people killed: Why does it matter? I think the problem is more the increased use of such devices in situations where it is not necessary. The percantage of people killed is likely to be the same over the years. But if you are going to use those weapons 500.000 times more every year (fictional number) the death toll will be higher. 2) Correlation ill people/people killed: Would you feel relieved if you hear that mostly people with a weak heart and/or diabetes are killed? The police officer had no idea if the man had a hearth disease or not, but accepted the possibility that the guy could be killed. I am not saying that I have a problem or not with the actual case, but somehow I have the sensation that the stock exchange value of a human life has dropped a lot in the last few years. And it is amazing how fast we get used to it. ciao stefan PS A more palpable example is the video of the polish guy killed at the Vancouver airport on the 14th October
  19. And the magnitude of the consequences has not to be in relation to "the crime" itself? ciao stefan
  20. Is this statement not a little bit to apocalyptical? Ok lets assume the USBF would disappear. Then another DFGTREDGF would send the teams to competitons. But on a personal note, where do I have to expect damage? ciao stefan btw, I found http://jonswift.blogspot.com/2007/11/bridge-too-far.html and the comments there worth reading. While I suppose that Keylime would rather suggest http://michellemalkin.com/2007/11/14/bds-a...-championships/
  21. Hello, I have some problems understanding the issue of the financial damage to the USBF. This is likely due of not knowing precisely what the USBF is and how it came up. As far as I understand it a puppet was needed, likely due of trying to become olympic, for sending USA teams to international competitions (since the ACBL is not confined to the USA). So the ACBL and the ABA transferred to the USBF the right to select the partecipating teams. The financial dependence on ACBL money seems to indicate too that the USBF is more an ACBL subcompany. Can someone clear the matter for me? And on a second thought, lets assume that the USBF had opposed the ACBL request of hard punishment so that they would not get any money in future. What would happen? Thank you, stefan
  22. No, no Jon, why such an angry answer? The solution is likely to be much more simple. I suspect that some of those hollywood screenplay writers on strike felt bored and put up a story with some twists ..... "Aunt Usbf had to punish the kinky niece ViCtoria for her childish behaviour. One of the punishments was to not allow ViCtoria to go to the 18th Birthday party of a friend held at the World Bridge Olympiade. But afterwards she felt somehow bad for having been so draconic. How could she make some amends without losing her face? A plan began to form in her mind .... if I try hard to get the whole family disinvited from the party ViCtoria will not be left alone at home ....." Hollywood at the best, tears, laughs and a drumfire of unxepected turnarounds to keep the spectator breathless.
  23. Hello, I think that the answer was simply poorly chosen. But I can also see that it is difficult to give a perfect answer due of the fictional assumption that we just play one game called bridge while we don't. So explaining something about the rules you have often to put several different things under one hat. A nice example is the mentioned answer fo Mr. Beye. A player asks about a certain behaviour at higher tourneys. Now Mr. Beye could give a straight answer, but no, he has to think about the different games called bridge out there and so he feels compelled to add something about - your *club* director - just to prevent anti-social behaviour at the club. I agree that it had been better to explain plainly what the rules demand and then add that at the club level sometimes a watering down is needed. BTW. Larry Cohen gives out a monthly newsletter. One of the topics this months was about what you should do if partner breakes tempo. http://www.larryco.com/BG%20articles/A48--Ethics.htm ciao stefan
