First of all, the one diamond bid is clearly too weak for this hand. If you had bid higher sooner, your opponents would likely have not gotten to four spades and either let you play in hearts or diamonds or gone down hard in another contract. Also, I do not like the 2 heart bid because you have not actually shown your length in ♦. If you had Ax, then you would have had 9 strong diamonds but might have played hearts or let opp overbid in spades. EDIT: I am sorry my use of pronouns is confusing: By "you" I mean your partner.

This hand is a classic preempt. Solid heart tricks with most of a limited amount of points in the heart suit and a void! 3♥ all the way. :D

I meant forcing in my post. Sorry. Also, I feel that 2♣ shows points that 1♠ cannot and is forcing to game, which helps partner evaluate your hand and bid accordingly.

I would pass- I think slam bidding is too optimistic and places partner with many key cards. If partner is missing even 2 key cards and slam can go down.

I think that both bidding and offensive/defensive play is important. However, you cannot make 7NT if you cannot bid it. The system to me does not matter- I usually play what my partner plays. However, it is crucial that you and your partner a) have the same bidding system and b) know how to bid it! :P Bidding is very important, as you do not get much credit for making overtricks- however good bidding doesn't matter when you cannot make it on play. So overall, I think both are equally important.

This is quite the hand, and bid well. The ♥ suit is just beautiful! :D

Cool example! However both the three heart bid and the six heart bid are not perfect. Bidding six hearts with at max eight between the partnership seems like a bad decision. No-Trump seems to yield a happy home for this contract. The heart bidding is the problem.

I would bid 2 clubs because 1 spade is not necessarily forcing. If partner is holding something like Jxx xxxx xxxx xx THey would just pass at 1 spade but they would be forced to bid the weak 2NT to a bid of 2 clubs.
