For me with only 5 points... I cannot force myself to go 4♥ here. I play slightly conservative and my style tells me no for this bid.

I definitely think that South, knowing he/she has a nine-card spade fit with partner, should bid 4♠ here. 4♥ gives a minimal gain if it is not made and as South you are not even sure if they will or not. 4♠ seems like it is a fine contract that even playing just from south's position with no knowledge of partner's hand I would bid 4♠. With a 3-2 trump break about 68% likely, I would play as if opps held that. I would guard against an overruff in ♦ by using my king and bet on a 3-2 trump break. Thanks for the response!

I think with a very strong 8-card suit you have to go 5♥. I agree with some of the other players who say that the double sounds too much like penalty. Your partner knows you are not crazy when you bid 5♥- you have something:) Suleiman

I read this and see a surprising amount of people opening one club, a bid I would not usually make with this type of hand. This hand seems like a perfect 1NT hand for many reasons as in PhilKing's post. Am I missing something? Why are you guys bidding one club? Please explain- thanks! Suleiman

I am surprised at the number of 1NT bidders. With a strong 5 card major I like 1♠. Especially with weakness in ♣, I am inclined to open 1♠. Anything I am missing? Thanks! Suleiman

I like 1♣ with the systems I play. What if opps have ridiculous spades? You could go down hard in NT. 1♣ seems safer and if partner is weak you are fine. Suleiman

It seems to me like pass is your only option. Your hand is too one-sided for 1NT and four-card suits seem a little weak to overcall. Anything I am missing? Or do others think that pass is correct? Thanks! :D Suleiman

Even as an elementary player, that seems like you have a cold 12 tricks. Was the opponent's distribution weird? Or am I missing something?

I agree mike- the South hand holds a perfect distribution to rule out any trump and makes both the bidding and the play harder for slam (in my humble opinion ;) ) Suleiman

It is very interesting to see what other people bid here. For me I would bid a simple 2♥ ( I think that 3♥ conveys 7 with 13+ points) and 2NT after partners spade bidding. I really do not know what else could be done. Any tips? Suleiman

@ Stephen: Declarer can avoid both spade tricks with helpful distribution as in the hand shown.
