  1. After 2nt-3♥ 3♠ = doubleton ♠ --> 4x natural 3nt = 3crd ♠ --> 4m control-showing; 4♥ re-transfer 4x = 4crd ♠ max, control-showing 4♠ = 4crd ♠ min
  2. If you mean 3♣ as Puppet Stayman together with 2♣ as Stayman, it doesn't make a difference. If you mean 2♣ as Puppet Stayman instead of Stayman, it does make a difference. In the latter case standard bidding will not help you and you need advice from fellow "2♣ Puppet Stayman" bidders on how to bid with 5-4 in the majors. Frankly, I don't know how they do it. That is one of the reasons I don't play that convention myself. S.
  3. 2♠ is an invite. With a stronger hand your partner should have started with Stayman. S.
  4. North's to blame: for his 3♦ bid (double is better because it shows 3 places to play) and for his raise of 3♥ to 4♥ (with a 3crd heart suit or with extras South would not have passed over 3♣) S.
  5. Two things I don't understand about this hand: Why didn't East double?How can you escape for only 1 down? S.
  6. I think it was Bergen who came up with the 4+4 rule: when you have at least 4 quick tricks and no more than 4 losers, open 2♣.
  7. [hv=pc=n&s=s9haqtdkqj853ck75&w=sqjhj853d97caqt96&n=st8653h94dt2cj842&e=sak742hk762da64c3&d=n&v=e&b=9&a=p1s2ddp4hppp]399|300[/hv] ♦K lead
  8. He can bid his second suit or Splinter. After that 4nt is RKB. With 5332 and 18 he can bid 5nt pick-a-slam. S.
  9. Note: you cannot bid 4♣ because that would be non-leaping Michaels [hv=pc=n&s=s952hdq3cakqt9842&d=w&v=n&b=12&a=3hpp]133|200[/hv]
  10. I open 1♠. I predict this bidding: [hv=d=s&v=0&b=11&a=pp1s2dpp4dp4sppp]133|100[/hv] S.
  11. I think 4♣ should show a control with 4crd spade support. I assume 4♥ would have been Last Train? Pass. S.
  12. Yes. IMHO a Namyats opening is just below a 2♣ opening. If you apply the 4+4 Bergen rule to decide whether to open 2♣, a Namyats opening is typically a hand that has 1 loser more or 1 quick trick less than what is needed for a 2♣ opening. S.
  13. I'd open 1♥ because I think the hand is not good enough for a reverse: 1♥-1♠ 2♣-2♦ 3♣-3♠ 3nt-4♥ pass
  14. ♥A, ♥ruff, ♦ruff, run the ♣J. If that holds, I continue with ♠. S.
  15. Suggested defence: dbl = 13-15 balanced or any hand too strong to overcall (18+), partner can double their 2M for penalty2♥ = minor 2suiter with better/longer clubs2♠ = minor 2suiter with better/longer diamonds2nt = natural (16-18), partner can bid 3m to play or 3M with shortness and both minors3x = natural (good suit) Your example is special because responder has passed. He has at least 5 diamonds and probably no 3crd suit in a major. That means partner probably has 8 cards in the majors. Passing can only be wrong when you have 3nt. But vulnerable at imps I don't want to take that risk and would bid 2nt. S.
  16. Next step is GI+ relay. Other bids are GI+ with 5crd M and shortness in the bid suit. After the relay: e.g. 1m-1♠-2♠-2nt: 3m min with 3♠ & 5m (NF)3om max with 3♠ & 5m3M min with 4♠ (NF)3oM max with 4♠ (but not see below)3nt max 4-3-3-34m max 4♠6m4om/oM max Splinter S.
  17. This hand is too strong for a 1♦ opening. In the given situation I would double and bid 5♦ over 5♣. S.
  18. I would have opened the South hand 1nt, but I assume you are not playing a 15-17 1nt opening. I also play a 2nt response as invitational or bettter, but I use the 3nt rebid by opener to show the balanced hand above my 1nt opening range. Then there's still some space left for cuebids & last train before going into RKB. But even under these conditions I would have gone to 6 with the North hand. If South turns up with AKQxx Jx KQx Kxx, there is a case for changing the system. S.
