  1. If opener can support responder's major with 3 cards when unbalanced what is a good structure for continuing?
  2. We do not play NFBs. Partner and I both do know what they are. I can see the value in a non--forcing diamond bid here. ♠KQxx ♥Jxx ♦AKJxxx ♣void How might the given hand be bid? I guess responder could forget the spades for now and start with diamonds? 1C - (2H) - 3D I sort of have this notion that a spade bid on 3 level now would just be values, not necessarily 4 cards and that responder skipping the negative double denies 4 spades. I don't know where I picked up those ideas -- I'm sure they could be completely wrong.
  3. 1♣ - (2♥) - Dbl - (P) 3♣ - (P) - 3♦ forcing? responder has ♠KQxx ♥Jxx ♦AKJxxx ♣void
  4. ok good. Assume IMPs, white vs white For those that use 2NT artificial here, 2NT shows good 4 card support whereas the cuebid shows exactly 3 card support right? How good is good 4 card support? 9+ (dummy) points? I assume the 3 card raise is a bit stronger? limit+?
  5. 1)[hv=pc=n&s=sjt72h2dt732c6543&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1s2h]133|200[/hv]2)[hv=pc=n&s=sjt72h2dqt92cat43&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1s2h]133|200[/hv] Does (1) qualify as a preemptive raise to 3♠? Can we differ (1) from (2)?
  6. I live in small town and learned to play casual rubber bridge with some friends and coworkers. A friend and I have gotten reasonably good playing online. We have never played duplicate in a live setting. We are starting to use quite a few bids that I know require an alert but I'm not sure how to do that! Say partner opens 1C, RHO passes and I bid 3C! (inverted). Does partner alert or do I? What exactly does the alerter do with the blue card? When asked for an explanation, who does the explaining?
  7. ♠4 ♥AT2 ♦KQ32 ♣JT743 Partner opens 1♥ and is doubled. 3♥ is of course preemptive. I was taught that 2NT (Jordan/Truscott) shows 4 card support. How do you handle this hand?
  8. [hv=pc=n&s=st64hajt54dkj7c43&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1d1s]133|200[/hv] double or 2♥? Fourth seat is going to raise spades with just about any hand with 3+ spades. If you bid 2♥, is such a call forcing when 4th seat passes? Change the heart ace to the queen. Does your answer change? How about if the club 3 is swapped with the ace?
  9. 1) ♠Jxx ♥KJx ♦KJx ♣Jxxx Partner opens 1♠ in first seat, red vs red. Partner opens all 12 pointers but not balanced 11 counts. Is my hand worth a limit raise? We play 2/1 and go through a forcing 1NT for a 3 card limit raise. 2) ♠Jx ♥KQx ♦KQx ♣Jxxxx Same scenario -- partner opens 1♠ in first seat. Should I invite or force game? Partner knows that 2♣ here, while game forcing, does not promise a strong club suit.
  10. 1♦ - (1♥) - Pass - (?) 2♦ would be a good heart raise. What is 1♠ here in terms of length/strength and forcing or not? How about 2♣? length/strength/forcing? What's your bid with ♠AKx ♥Ax ♦xxxx ♣QJxx?
  11. [hv=pc=n&n=saj62haj92dq84cjt&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1ddrp]133|200[/hv] Firstly, could south have bid a 4 card major after the double and would such a bid be forcing? Secondly, a redouble generally denies fit right? so I must bid 1NT or something?
  12. [hv=pc=n&s=st2hk7dakqj954ckt&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1h1s]133|200[/hv] 2♠ shows heart support 2♦ is not forcing (should it be?) 3♦ is weak (good? bad? whatever?) double shows both minors What's your call? More generally I'm trying to suss out which responses after an overcall are forcing.
  13. [hv=pc=n&n=sat63hq53dkqjt92c&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1np2cp2hp]133|200[/hv] I am used to four suit transfers where we have the transfer to show minor single suiters and so 3♦ here would promise 4 spades, longer diamonds and game forcing, however, at the urging of partner we are playing minor suit stayman. But now we need a way to show strong minor single suiters so 3♦ here doesn't promise 4 spades right? How do you show this hand without missing a possible 4--4 spade fit? 3NT (which would promise 4 spades) seems unappealing.
  14. 1NT - 2♣ 2♥ - 2♠? Strong 1NT, 2♣ is standard Stayman, could be weak with 5-4 or longer majors. What does 2♠ mean?
  15. Low key rubber bridge once a week with a group of coworkers x/xxx/AKxxx/AQxx I open 1D, partner responds 1S, I want to bid 2C (not 1NT) I think? But: Partner suggests that this bid (2C) is forcing and I should rebid 1NT or 2D instead. We are at an impasse. Is such a method playable (any new suit by opener is forcing)? I always understood that a new suit by opener is only forcing if it is a reverse.
  16. What exactly is a picture bid? Can you provide an example?
  17. Thank you, I like this: forcing and can be 4 cards. Bridge Baron says 5+ cards with 11+ points which seems incongruent with playing the cuebid as heart support. With one partner we had established the agreement that 2♣ shows heart support and limit+ values, 3♣ is a mixed raise, but we hadn't agreed on this spot! Funny how we have all these cool forcing and invitational sequences in non-competitive auctions yet this simple spot went overlooked. Since the overcall can be quite light (say 9ish points but always a 5+ card suit), what is a reasonable minimum for bidding 1♠ here? How about 2♦?
  18. 1♣ - 1♥ - P - ? Can I introduce a 4 card spade suit here? If not, what is your bid with something monstrous like AKQx/xx/AKxx/xxx?
