Why I am giving up on BBO
jdulmage replied to hrothgar's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I don't blame you for wanting to leave. One thing that's been clear is the advantage being taken of the pandemic. Thousands flocked to BBO and in exchange BBO has decided it's OK to charge $15 for an online regional and $6 for a SYC game when there's bare minimum efforts required to run these games. Not to mention the fact that it's only 18 boards when it should be 24. It's sad. I hardly spend a dime on BBO now. It's just not the same as it used to be. -
Always penalty. You can bid 2 spades if you want to show spades

What's the dumbest bid you've ever seen?
jdulmage replied to card_cat's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
My RHO opened 2NT 20-21 HCP. I held AKQJT in a single suit and figured why not? I doubled. My LHO bid 3NT so I doubled again. Down 2. -
Would you be upset with partner or....
jdulmage replied to thepossum's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
I think this is fine and grand is a bit rich. Side note, you should never truly be upset with your partner. Enjoy :) -
I'd say always super accept a transfer with those points and 5 trump. Those who open 1 spade will likely have a partner just bid 4 spades anyway.
-
Sorry just realized you got a 2C interference. I'd bid 3C over that then partner can go 3H and then you can cue 4D to look for slam.
-
I'm opening 1!S and partner can do Jacoby 2NT and I can respond 3!C showing shortness. Partner loves that with 2 small clubs and can bid 3!D and now we are off to the races. :)

There's just enough substance here to bid 2NT. Good luck and enjoy this wonderful game :)

bridge and poker
jdulmage replied to polarmatt's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Once I had been playing (and winning) at bridge I decided to try poker thinking I'd have equal success. Never happened. Not even close. I would say the two games do not mix well. -
I play Mathe over strong club openings. DBL shows both majors, cheapest NT bid shows both minors. All other bids are natural. With the opponents having a majority of the points you best be showing some sort of good distributional values. For the Mathe bids, 5-5 in the suits or better. For the natural bids, 6+ in the suit and more often than not a singleton or void elsewhere.

That's exactly it! Thanks a lot!

Interesting!

The middle hands are east-west separated by a period. Top and bottom hands are north-south. Sorry again.

The computer says only 2NT can be made but I'm seeing 3NT all day on any lead or defense. Anyone know how to beat 3NT by E-W? Sorry using my phone to type this. The hands are from spades down to clubs. A9732 J2 Q3 QT92 J8. QT6 K97. AQ83 T85. AK742 K8543. A K54 T654 J96 J76

Myxomatosis Two Bids - Allowed?
jdulmage replied to jdulmage's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
Ok, thanks all for your help. I know they are quote/unquote "stupid", we are just trying out a bunch of different things to see what happens. Fortunately, it's months before the next major event and so I have time to mess around. -
I want to try a variation of Myxomatosis Two Bids and want to know if it's allowed at club level/general convention chart. To make this short, basically opening 2 diamonds shows hearts, 2 hearts shows spades and spades shows clubs. Thanks for your help.

No it's not. The auction period ends when all four players pass or when after three passes in rotation have followed any call the opening lead is faced.

BBO is trying hard to prevent cheaters, we don't need to lift the blocking of messages.

That is not very BBO spirited of you, what about the FUN element of bridge and the fact most people that use bridgebase do so for a bit of social interaction as opposed to Playing bridge to the most rigid rules imaginable. I think if you had your way JD (with that statement) there would be no free tourneys and I am sure that some of the pay tourneys would have to shut down also. That would leave tourneys only run by ACBL directors. so we would all end up paying and playing for points that are worthless to anyone but an american point collector I actually beleive that a lot of people play in the free or pay tourneys as it is a better way to play a stable game than taking a flyer in the main lounge, not as many table hoppers. A bridge game that is chaotic and uncontrolled is not my idea of a FUN bridge game as you call it. If you want FUN bridge, go play in the church league. The discussion here is how the TD vanished, not about FUN. I keep capitalizing it because you think it's more important than the game itself, which it's not. My idea of fun is a well controlled bridge event that is both social and competitive. I would not play in a field full of yahoos, on the other end, I would not play in a field where nobody was social. There is nothing wrong with getting these TDs certified. Certification can be as high as ACBL or WBF level or as low as a brief examination ran by BBO themselves to make sure the TD is fit and capable. Has nothing to do with fun, socializing or competitiveness. So you pulled that out of thin air. All I know is if I paid to be in that tournament and all of those people were disconnecting and there was no TD, I would have demanded my money back. Lastly, in no way, shape, or form would any of the tournaments be shut down with my suggestions. Again, pulled out of thin air.

Nail on the head by pclayton.

So a pass of 2♠ by you is GF and a double of 2♠ is weak? You are probably opposite a takeout double then, but with weak spade holding. I'd say singleton or doubleton garbage. I'd say it pretty well guarantees 4 hearts. If he had a balanced hand without 4 hearts, but strength in the unbid suits, he could bid 3 spades asking for a stopper. Better yet...ask your partner, lol.
-
I'd take it as penalty. The 2♣ opener has got to have another bid besides double and if you had a penalty hand for 2♠, you would have doubled immediately, not passed.
