  1. Agreed. The 3♥ Jump suggests 4-5 losers and a great ♥ fit. Strength matters here only in that partner's values are well positioned after opener's. I wonder what a 14-17 HCP 4441 hand does with their system...
  2. I too like 3♦ more than 2♠. Partner will likely settle there without substantial extras.
  3. 4♥ Partner's jump suggests a strong hand and shape that was not convenient for your overcall system - something about x=4=y=5 or the like. I'd double with same shape and fewer HCP whenever we don't have a penalty double (as here). So, a 7-loser that might eliminate a ♠ loser on a long ♣ seems worth a raise.
  4. Tempted to play LHO for 5=2=4=2. Don't think 6=1=4=2 finds a ♦ lead. Nor would 5=2=3=3 or similar. If 4=2=5=2, then LHO should hold the goods. A10xxx xx Axxx xx is a modest 1-level overcall. I choose to win the lead in hand (does RHO have the A?) and lead toward dummy's ♣s. If ♣s split so that I have 2 (not one) losers, then I will rely on the doubleton ♥k with LHO and play A and duck. That leaves the ♠Q entry for a later ♥ finesse.
  5. ..or 4♦ showing a void  Playing 4♦ as the "first" splinter wastes control bid space unnecessarily.
  6. Double. Optional penalty. Club shortness.
  7. Stephen, I agree with you. The only thing first trick told us was everyone played a card to the trick, so that suit did not break 0 for something. The play of that card provided no useful information as to vacant spaces. Thus the 12/13 ratio still applies at trick two.

  9. We play (1♣) - 3♣ (direct seat) as preemptive, not Stopper ask/Western. We play 1 any - P - P - J/S as either: 1) Intermediate 12-16, or 2) Intermediate Plus 14-17. If 1) is our agreement, then we need to bid 2♣ (partner to bid) then simple ♦ rebid. Double is wrong on this hand. Too much offense. If 2) is our agreement, then we bid 2♦. I prefer 2), so 2♦ it is.
  10. 4♣ 2♣ will almost always be on 6 cards and a (near) opening hand. We angle to gain when they hold 23-24 HCP and a fit and we pressure them into game. I discourage partners from overcalling on less than 11 here opposite and unpassed partner. Finesses will be working and I have 2 likely entries in ♣.
  11. 11 to 17 with semibalanced and unbalanced hands as high as 15-17 5-5 in the reds is possible unless we are playing some gadget. Picture/textbook 2N - shows 10-11 and inability to make a limit raise. Of course if the expected style is very light then 2♥ is best. 2♥ is what I do playing Precision.
  12. 2N. If I only bid 2♥, partner will play me for much less.
  13. 2♥ with these methods. Since precision has a single raise at 8-10 to begin with, 2 is not much of an overbid as a passed hand. The downside of 2♥ is it gives enterprising defenders more bids to find fit and level.
  14. Pure penalties. Opener will pass with any hand suitable for play opposite a 4-card major, so responder can reopen with a double. If responder has the garbage hand and opener doesn't have a club stack, then we are in the right spot. I'd want 2 ♣ honors to double. With a 4-card major I pass.
  15. Prefer minorwood to kickback as long as we both know when MW is on an when it is off. We use Kickback for the minors (Redwood) only in specific power auctions where there is no room to show fit before level (e.g. after the 3♠ transfer to 3N and responder bids 4m as a minor suit slam try. 4m+1 is RKB).
  16. I put about 25 HCP between LHO and partner. Pass. Bidding is far from over.
  17. 3♣ now. Partner will prefer NT with club values and only 3 ♠ cards. Would have bid 2♣ instead of 1♠.
  18. Can't raise to game directly because I have no help in clubs. However this is a 3-cover max (with poor shape), so 3♦ it is. Perhaps that will be enough for partner to judge strain and level. 3N is not out of the question.
