Had a similar hand in a similar context today. 4♥ would describe the playing potential and overall shape. I voted Double but I think 4♥ is better.

Like the (East Coast) turnpike tool - an EZ Pass. 7 tricks (+ 1 from partner, perhaps) means we're over our head unless partner can take action. Let's wait and see...

the weak 2 strikes
SteveMoe replied to zasanya's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I'd double. If partner is weak with ♣ then Lebensohl will land is in the right spot. If advancer removes to a red suit over my ♣ puppet I will raise. If advancer bid 3♠ I can bid 3N in comfort. -
6-4 reds over 4 spades
SteveMoe replied to Antrax's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Everything is to my left. Partner has nothing. RHO should also be close to broke. I will pass prudently and hope they go set. -
Law-abiders might trot out 7♦. Yawn. Me, I'll try 3♠ forcing, then 4♥ if partner corrects to ♦ or offers a feature in ♣. I pass partner's raise to 4♠. After their double, I will bid the minimum number of ♦ left to me.

your everyday balancing decision
SteveMoe replied to billw55's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Hobson's choice. Passing might be our last chance at a sure plus. I'm not going to pass. It's still a bidder's game. 3N might be a K too weak. (I expect pard to have about 8 HCP here). With 4333 shape we need partner to provide length tricks. AJx won't stop twice if RHO holds a K or Q, and we expect RHO to have the missing entries. Ugh. Double might find pard with some 3=1=45. A saving grace is our minor honors are well positioned. Since partner rates to have 3.5 ♠ and 1.5♥ I'm doubling and hoping for the best. -
mixed or limit raise
SteveMoe replied to straube's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Mixed raise. 5 spades and KQ tight are downgrades. True it's an 8 loser count but so is Axxxx Jxxx Kx xx. My preference is to have full LRs (11-12 SPs and 8 losers) for partner opposite an aggressive Precision opener. I'm bidding 2♥. Partner knows how to make a game try. -
how many diamonds?
SteveMoe replied to straube's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
4♦ 10+ trumps. Too sheepish to try 3♠ 'cuz with my luck partner will have the max and bid 5♦ with no play. 3♠ has the best shot at keeping them quiet. -
Who was most to blame?
SteveMoe replied to Quartic's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
(following Quiddity).....and North's double seems premature too. If we allow EW a 9 card fit, then South has a singleton ♥. add 5♠s then partner must have a 4-card minor. 4♣ seems a standout bid and might find a slam. 1♠ is fine in an intermediate+ game, but an average club player would probably see South as holding a Weak 2 bid. I would offer a 60% North, 40% South split. Many will find 40% for South severe, but playing with an unknown pick up partner they will expect more defense. Now if partner is a BBOer then North gets 100% - for the critique of the opening bid, of course! Finally I agree with the ♥ lead on this auction - reducing their likely trump tricks might be essential to our success. True, the ♠A or ♦K is a winner on the actual layout, but there are many constructions where a ♥ switch would be one trick too late. -
4♣ is enough for now. Must be forcing. Let's see where partner wants to go. We look to be heading toward 6♣.

From the ACBL Alert Procedures web page (See bottom): ANNOUNCEMENTS An announcement is one word or a short phrase which tells the opponents directly the meaning of partner's call. When bidding boxes are used, the "Alert" strip is tapped also. Announcements are required in the following instances: After a natural one notrump opening bid. EXAMPLE: A 15-17 1NT opening bid is made. The partner of the bidder will say aloud, "fifteen to seventeen." After a or transfer response at any level to any level natural notrump opening, overcall or rebid. An Announcement also is used for those methods that initially treat the bid as a transfer even though rarely the bidder will have a strong hand without the next higher suit. When the message is sent that the transfer was not a transfer, just the first step in showing another type of game-going hand, the call that sends that message must be Alerted. EXAMPLES: 1NT-P-2 and 1-1NT-2-4 The 1NT bidder will say aloud, "Transfer." After a 1NT forcing or semi-forcing response to a 1 or 1 opening bid with no interference. EXAMPLE: 1-P-1NT The opening bidder will say aloud, "Forcing" or "Semi-forcing," if there was no other meaning attached to the agreement (such as showing four or more spades). 4. After a non-forcing opening 1 or 1 for which the opener could have fewer than three cards in the suit opened. After the opening bid, the opening bidder's partner says, "May be short." That said, once asked how many cards short is, you must reply. Telling someone to check your convention card is not appropriate. The asker has the rigth to clarify under whaat conditions do oyu open 1♣ with zero ♣ cards & how that affects your 1♦ bid.

Agree with Straube. One alternative that is simple splits the 0-7 HCP range into 3 parts: Pass = 0-3 1♦ = 4-5 Redouble = 6-7 Play all responder suit bids as natural 8+. Systems still on. However over Mathe 1N (ostensibly for the minors) we play our NT systems: 2♣ = stayman 2♦/♥ = Jacoby Transfers 2♠/NT = transfers to minors (Asking Partial Stopper; showing Jxx or Qxx)[You can choose to turn this off] Partner can respond with NT hands or Major hands, ignoring the transfer to one major if holding the other, etc. 3♣/♦ is GF NT Stop Double is penalty [Hxxx+ in one or both minors] 3N promises stoppers in both minors, and tends to deny 4-card majors. All other Major bids would be to play. 4 minor jumps would be Super 4441 hand. BTW we do the same thing if they overcall our 1NT opening with 2NT. Works like a charm

Would have approached this as a forcing pass situation. ... double to show wasted ♦ values or a minimum. ... pass with no wastage and top of bid values. ... bid 4N with a sure stop and a source of tricks. I wonder if any would bid a 5-card major (partner corrects to 4N if necessary)? So on this post I double.

Leads against Notrump
SteveMoe replied to barmar's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
They do indeed recommend leading a high honor when holding HHxxx or HJx or even Hxx (depending on other cards in hand). I believe the right lead from Hxxxx would depend on whether we hold side entries. I do not see this as much of a departure from lead disclosure requirements - but perhaps a departure from lead tendencies we have all become comfortable with. I am uncertain that choosing to lead high from KQxxx is wrong or misleading given the vague way that leads are currently disclosed (fair warning I know ACBL only). I am also pretty sure that leading small from Hxx or Jxx is not considered misleading when playing 4th best. Again the emphasis is on choosing a major when opponents have a NT auction that biases against holding many major cards. I suggest that choice lies within the parameters of disclosure as currently required. I will suggest that the authors did not suggest a systemic approach, just some empirical findings and a new thought process. I do not think thought processes are legislated are they? I hope we don't have to disclose all the bridge books we've read... -
Will try: ♥A then ♥ ruff small. Play along dummy reversal lines using (small) ♦ to reach table for 2 more ♥ ruffs. Avoid ♦ finesse - ♦J falling in 3 rounds is 54+%. Play for Trumps to be 3-2.

BRIDGE WORLD DOUBLES
SteveMoe replied to mike777's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Phil, I am pretty sure that Cooperative Penalty and Cooperative Take-out are both forms of BoP doubles - Colchamiro talks about how context frames penalty and takeout BoP interpretations. -
Echoing others, well said Phil.

Playing 4♣ RKB over 3-level preempts with responses something like" 0, 1, 1+Q, 2, 2+Q ?? Good idea!
-
Agreeing with Fluffy, adding... I would have ruffed out ♥ then played trump A then small toward trump Q. Hope they have to break the minors for me.
-
I would bid 3♥ if partner would show ♠ shortness by bidding 3♠ or doubling their ♠ bid. I think showing shortness by the opening preempter when fitting responder's new suit is useful. However failing that approach bidding 4♥ directly has a lot to recommend it. 6 of a red suit seems to require much from partner: x xx KQxxxxx Axx - maybe on a good day...
-
Definitely like the bidding you propose if 2♣ is Natural or balanced GF. Agree that 3♠ not 3♥ is better IFF 2♠ promised 6. If it didn't then 3♥ endplays partner into 3N (I assume here partner will rebid 3♥ on 5=4 regardless of strength). So, now I can trot out Gerber if partner will understand 4♣ here as that convention. The only likely error will be taking this as a control bid - which is OK too. (Silly here that regardless how partner interprets the 4♣ bid, we will move on partner's 4♥ call toward the grand slam, while retire in 6N on any other call). We will steer toward 6N unless we can identify 13 tricks. We need to find the ♠KQ, the ♣K, and the ♥A for 13.
-
Partner thinks s/he can extract punishment for opener's indiscretion so I will cooperate and pass. Expecting opener to have a ♥ void. (Lose the title - no place for that).
-
Doesn't pass then double show this hand properly? Too many ♠ for initial action, shortness in ♣ with adequate shape and strength for a 3-level TO.
