[hv=pc=n&s=st652h8dak952cakt&n=skj9hj952dt83c987]133|200[/hv] The auction was (Dealer East) 1♣ 1♦ x p 1♥ p p 2♦ 2♥ 3♦ 3♥3♠ p 4 ♦ all pass At some other tables the auction was: 1♣ 1 ♦ x p 1♥ 2 ♦ p p 2♥ p p 3♦ All pass It would appear that Gib thought the over-caller in auction one had a stronger hand than in auction 2. Is that the case? Is there a flaw in Gib logic in this type of competitive auction?

Questions after ACBL bidding book
easy replied to mm_aa's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
hi welcome to the wonderful world of bridge. I actually teach beginning bridge using the books you are refering to. let me see if i can give you some answers to your questions. 1) The point count ranges were changed to reflect the current style of bidding in the usa. I remember when the original series was published i questioned the use of the 16-18 no trump range. Even then the no trump range of 15-17 was predominant in the states. 2) The book "bidding" is the first of 5 texts used in this series to teach bridge. the course is designed to give you the basic skills needed when deciding partscore versus game. Higher level bidding is (i presume) deemed to difficult for this course level. ( note every time i teach the portion in the 2nd chapter re: scoring many students throw up their hands in disgust and confusion.) 3) Responding to 1nt is taught early on because there are fewer bids and options when partner opens no trump than when he opens 1 of a suit. The no trump opener has a limited range of points (15-17) thus it is easier for the student to decide upon a course of action. 4) Higher level bidding will be discussed in future texts. the series of books consists of Bidding - basic bidding and a light discourse on overcalls, takeout doubles and stayman - some card play instruction as well Play of the Hand - includes review of bidding learned in "bidding" plus how to play the cards Defense - another review of bidding plus defensive leads and signals and defensive strategy Commonly used conventions - just as the title says More commonly used conventions - ditto hang in there. by the end of the 8th chapter you and your friends will be able to sit around around the kitchen table and enjoy bridge as much as we oldtimers do! i would suggest playing as often as possible to reinforce what you are learning Good luck Fred -
Personally i would texas and then key card for spades. After the key card bid i would ask kings (specific or otherwise). This would promise all of the controls and the q of spades. Partner has an easy 7nt bid after that. (he can count 4c, 4d, 1h and 5/6 spades, assuming spades split)

Perhaps i used the wrong name. The interface im talking about is the one where you can play, kibitz bbo via your browser. The beta version was called bbo tv i have no idea what it is called now.
-
When kibitzing i usually look at only 1 hand. I like comparing my play, defense and bidding judgement with that of the best player at the table. This provides me with a valuable learning experience by allowing me to "play" against and with the best players in the world. Using bbo tv i cant find the option to choose which hand to kibitz. Therefore i must look at all 4 hands...not the best way for me to"play" as a kibitzer. Is this currently possible to view only 1 hand? If not, is there a plan to provide this feature?

Frankly if a team included a player that was not elegible to play in an event i would be forced to disqualify the entire team. Even if the team did not know that the player was inelegible the fact is : he participated in (and won) matches in which he was ineligible to play . Thus the team benefited from the play of an inelegible player. Was the player really inelegible? Did the conditions of contest indicate that a person that has represented their country should petition the acbl to determine how many points their level of expertise dictated? Is it a given that the above mentioned petition should be made regardless of the conditions of contest ?I dont know the answer but i guess since the acbl subsequently disqualified him (after having won the event) they feel that he was inelegible. let's say the team was disqualified. How would the results be adjusted. What would happen to all of the teams that the disqualified team had defeated. How deeply should one go to adjust the event results. What a nightmare! Im sure the acbl said "lets avoid that hassle and just disqualify the player and let the team keep its victory". As an aside i too played in the event and was beaten by the team in question in the quarter finals. They outplayed us and deserved to win the match and would have won with or without the internationalist.

[hv=d=n&v=n&s=skxxxhxdxxckqxxxx]133|100|Scoring: MP 1D- P - 1S - 2H X* - P - ? * SUPPORT DOUBLE[/hv] Your partnership plays, 14-16 nt, 2/1 gf. Your call. After selecting your call please indicate what you plan to do over pards various possible responses.

I'd like to see someones system notes re transfer responses over 1c. Inthe mean time, those of you that play them could you explain to me the diferences between the following auctions. * transfer to hearts 1c - 1d* 1h = 2h = 3h = Thanks much

Sounds to me like pard has 3361 distribution with good overcall. I bid spades. I'm willing to bet the different interpretations of this sequence will be based on which continent you play bridge.

thx but i have suit play. Suit play discusses how to play various suit combinations ,Ill maccino does that and more. (at least i hope so) Il maccino program analyzes different lnes of play and is influenced by what you know about the opponensts hands.

Fred

I was reading the Bridge di Italia magazine a couple of days ago and found a reference to a program written by Luigi Salemi that purports to accurately analyze lines of play. Searched on net and finally found the site to download software which i have downloaded. Ok here is the problem. The Instructions for using the program are in italian. Now i read and speak italian fairly well but somehow im missing something. I really want to test out the software! Is there anyone out there that has more detailed instructions on how to enter the data. The web site is visainformatica.it/cbc and the program is called "il Maccino" (the mill) Im going to post this in the italian section of forum also... hopefully someone will be able to give me a hand. Maybe cherdano could help me out with this.

Using an attached queen as a 4/5th King
easy replied to easy's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
yeah very true, but as i told you , the auction reeked. change their hand to axx kqxx ax axxx and they have the same 13 tricks -
The south american bridge championships are being held in Lima, Peru in june of 2008. Does anyone know anything about lodging, transportation etc. i have gone to the South american zonal web site and found only info re dates of tourney. I love to go to S.A. for bridge the people are warm and the bridge is good. 2 years ago we went to cartagena for their transnational events. Was nice to play against chagas, vila boas, lambardi, madala, and a good young american player (kevin bathurst) Any way all info will be greatly appreciated thx

Today i was playing and either had an epiphany or a brain fart depends on how you look at it. I have decided i want to change my blackwood responses. I want to have 5 kings (or 4 if you play some form of key card)is appropriate. My fifth king will be a queen attached to a kxx or longer. This assumes that when pard bids rkc or straight blackwood followed by king ask we have all of the aces. Showing this "5" king may well allow pard to count 13 tricks for the grand. Before i try this im giving you guys the opportunity to explain to me why I HAVE LOST MY F....... MIND. And if i havent lost my mind under which circumstances it might be appropriate to apply this method. i can see where this could cause a problem when pard thinks i have a king that has just solidified his 4-card suit or longer are there any other pitfalls? The reason this came up is because i was kibitzing this hand: I know the auction sucks please just address the concept. [hv=d=w&v=n&w=saxxhjxxdaxcakqxx&e=sxhadkqtxxxxxcxxx]266|100|Scoring: MP 1N - 3♣ transfer 3♦ 4n 5♦* 5n ** 6♦ 6N * - 0/3 controls ** - number of kings[/hv]

Did i really open 1h with 5-5 in majors? i pass 4s. Here's a question. If you were to open 1s and pard bid 2s would you look for slam? Probably not. That is why you should be done looking for slam with this hand. And by the way what ever happened to the concept that when we splinter we turn over the captaincy of the hand to partner.

Jlall Posted on Nov 4 2007, 04:01 AM I play what jdonn plays. Well since you are from Dallas, Texas (home of Bobby Goldman , may he rest in piece) I would expect you to play as jDonn plays..... the Goldman Slam Try. Let's give bobby his due. He was a great theorist, player and most of all person. Bobby wrote aces scientific, (i would guess) 25 years ago and there are still many good treatments to be learned from that "tome"

Ok i've gotta ask... (a) what is a bergen constructive raise (B) is this really played by " bergenists " as a passed hand? Who are we trying to keep out of the bidding? and finally addressing the question. I pull to 4s.
-
First of all ,in general splitting from JTx can easily be the losing play. ?[hv=n=skq9hdc&w=sjtxhdc&e=saxxhdc&s=sxxxxhdc]399|300|[/hv] surely splitting in any form is nuts whether the dummy is to the left or rite of west. But ok lets assume a holding where its reasonable to split. Wouldnt it be nice for pard to know what our holding is. If playing the J promises a 3 card sequence headed by the J and the T denies a 3 card sequence headed by the jack pard will know what to do with regard to that suit so much more often. I dont see that happening when we split low from JT9. In fact isnt this the same method we use when discarding, a discard of hign honor promises the next 2/3 lower

shifting that one card eliminates a loser. so yes it is closer to 4 than 2. in addition the 4th spade gives you an additional potential winner. personally when i have a side 4-card suit suit i treat the 4th card in my side suit as an additional card in my long 6/7/8 card suit. Im going to decide on 3/4 by evaluating my opponents. If they havent doubled me in 3 months im bidding 4:) if they double at the drop of a hat i bid 3.
