TD changing rules after tourney starts
bambi1 replied to dogsbreath's topic in BBO Tournaments Discussion
I shall definitely announce NO FORCING PASS in the future. That for SURE will eliminate any misunderstandings, as well as the Laws of Duplicate bridge being enforced. But I am sure something will come up, and I will alter again! Don't you just love this game? -

TD changing rules after tourney starts

I would like to add two comments. Firstly, some connections are more stable than others, that is well known to all of us. The best thing for you to do Dogs is to play in an unclocked tournament. That way you can finish in the allotted time. You may finish 10 boards at 7 minutes a board in 70 minutes. Others may finish in 90 minutes, so the results final results are not readily available to you with your quick finish! Secondly, regarding DrTodds post. I have now added in my tournament rules, to Alert All Artificial Bids - Full disclosure is required - Laws of Duplicate Bridge (ACBL) are enforced. That eliminates any forcing pass system - hope that clarifys any misunderstandings in the future. And I hope players read the tournament rules! -
Question about alerts policy on BBO
bambi1 replied to Flame's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Best policy, if you think it might need alerting than Alert ! :P In the tournaments I direct, I have the policy written in the Tournament Rules, I ask for ALL bids (with the exception of stayman, blackwood and neg X) to be alerted. Full explanation is required if asked. I think it has to be spelled out by the TD what is acceptable. -
Question about alerts policy on BBO
bambi1 replied to Flame's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
With online bridge , it is best if we follow the Duplicate Laws. Law 40 - Partnership Understanding - states "a player may make any call or play (including an intentionally misleading call)" without prior announcement, provided it is not based on partnership agreement. Law 75 - "Special partnership agreements, must be fully and freely available to the opps. In my opinion the opps should know exactly what your partner knows (or thinks he knows :-). -
Ece and Steve please do not leave BBO
bambi1 replied to Rado's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
What a shame to hear this news :( Unfortunately I can relate to your decision  Good TDs are few and far between. You leave many friends and admirers behind. Best of luck to you both in your future endeavors. -
First of all I am shocked at the response from this post. I received over 40 emails, and the support and compassion was truly overwhelming. As for the Laws of Duplicate bridge, I follow them implicitly. Regarding Law 74, Proper Attitude and Etiquette you are very correct. I direct live twice a week, and would not hesitate to enforce any legitimate rule. As for you comment about announcing to the Tournament I would cancel, I did that, but I messaged the players who were complaining that I would cancel it, where as I should have announced it to the entire tournament. As for "nuking" offensive players, I was a little leary of nuking a yellow! "Deers" only have so much courage! Again I apprecaite all the input. Some folks are wise, and some are otherwise !! Have a good day

According to your posting people turn off lobby chat. They don't read tournament rules. (so I should stop complaining!) Last but not least, I don't care whether they swore AT me or about my actions. It is UNACCEPTABLE.

Last night (Tuesday) I was asked by a fellow TD to run his tournament as he was unable to do so. I was not sure if it was possible, as this is a very busy time for me at work, and I need my computer at home. Well out of the goodness of my heart I decided to run a quick 8 board Tournament, posted it , and listed the rules. As tournament time came close I announced several times in the lobby to please read the tournament rules before playing. The tournament began, and after my first announcement of "Welcome to IMP Tonight. This is an UNCLOCKED tournament, 8 boards" I was messaged by one saying "ugh, my partner and I do not play in unclocked tournaments" I responded by saying I would sub her out as there were many who wanted to play that could not get in. She responded "no, I stay." I told her it was ok as there were plenty of subs, and again she responded she would stay. A couple of other players remarked they do not like UNclocked events either. I wrote a message in the Tourament chat stating that it was written as UNclocked in the tournament rules, and if they didnt want to play, they should not have registered. The tournament continued. I was called to tables asking for more time, and I announced again in the chat area it was UNclocked, not to worry about the time. The tournament was almost over , there were 2 tables playing, and I was kibitzing one table. I got private messages, "this was a waste of time", "I will never play in unclocked events again", "you should know better bambi". I wrote back, that it would make their life a lot easier if they read the tournament rules first" The player at the table was not playing, and the declarer said, "he must be bored like the rest of us". Well, at that moment I was just so fed up with the abuse I cancelled the tournament. (it was one hour after it started). Then back in the lobby I was being messaged, and I went to answer when coffee spilled all over my keyboard, I unplugged it immediately, so I could not respond......but I did see in the chat area "Bambi has some explaining to do", "I have reported her to uday","She better not have cancelled.". I was messaged privately, "who do you think you are", what the F___did you do?". Now........ I volunteered to do this tournament for a fellow TD. I am not paid, and I do it because I enjoy directing. I have run touraments on BBO for some time, and yes I make mistakes. I was appalled at the abuse from the players (and staff) of BBO. I did NOT ask anyone to register for this tournament, they chose to do so. Who's responsibility is it to read the Tournament Rules? They complained about a waste of time - who's time - mine or theirs? Don't you think they should be grateful there was a tourament at all? What happened to ty Bambi, we appreciate you running this for bb116. (btw , there were a few accolades from players, especially those who know me). I have no idea whether I will be banned from BBO, or from directing. I do know that this is reputed to be a Zero Tolerance site. Well, my tournaments are Zero Tolerance. This rude and ungrateful behavior is unacceptable by me. I know SOME online bridge players, because they are annonymous, speak and act inappropriately, I will not be a part of this, as my rules and ethics do not allow it. This explanation if for all of you. Fellow TDs, players who were worried about me, players who threatened me, and players who abused me. Thank you

Volunteer Directors Needed Please
bambi1 replied to hallway's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
I would be ready, willing and hopefully able to help direct if you need. I am not available during the day as I am at work, most evenings (exception Wed and Fri - as I direct a weekly tournament) I can assist you. Good luck, sounds like fun. :P -
Ty for all your hard work and dedication Gweny. Much appreciated :D

Tonight I play in BBO Flight and I notice no kibitzers is allow so I ask why. Very astute Bambi notice players is maybe able to sub in kibitzers to play. This create large potential problem. "very astute Bambi" I like that Gweny! I ran NO KIBITZERS as I was not sure if they could sub. Now that players can get their own subs, I wasnt too crazy about the idea of them choosing a kibitzer! I did hear from uday, and kibitzers are allowed to sub if they are invited by a player or by the TD. I think uday will look into this further if it poses a big problem.

A couple of notes: If the TDs could see the time players took to bid and play that would be very helpful in deciding on any adjustment. An added bonus would be if we could see how many tables had finished the boards when the round is almost complete. As for adjustments. I always ask for table #, board # and result. It is very helpful and I do not have many problems. A hint is to ask the players to type in their chat box (at the round change) the table # and board number(s). That way it is always accessible to them if they need it. I think the players get to know each TD and what is expected of them. How much is tolerated, and how we handle situations. Every TD has their own style, but the bottom line is we should all obide by Bridge Laws. Making or not making adjustments is up to the individual TD. (a tourney without adj. I would not play in. ;) Also, bigger tournaments are not better tournaments. I feel the survivor movement is being over used and abused. I thought uday created this to make it easier for TDs (as disconnected players would not be seated next round, making substitutions less of a problem). Many TDs are running BIG tournaments with 35% cut after 2nd round. Most players do not like this, and it is very difficult to direct a tournament of a big size with this high cut. Twice I was KOed because TD could not get to table in time (slow play) and we were in a x contract making :D I think if you choose this format, you cannot direct alone. As for A+ and A-, I try and stay away from that if possible. If there are a couple of cards left to play, I will adjust to the correct contract. If the contract is impossible to adjust than A+ and A- is my only alternative. Some unscrupulous players use that to their advantage, as they are in 5NTX going down, playing very slowly, and end up with A-. (There are 6 cards left to play, hard to adjust as the play in unpredictable). Pair ends up with 40% instead of a zero (maybe!). Well we are on the way to better software for directing. Thank you uday!

I AM SICK OF GETTING SUCKED INTO TOURNEYS
bambi1 replied to bglover's topic in BBO Tournaments Discussion
I have been "drawn" into more tourneys than I can count on one hand without my permission. Like the rest of you I find it very annoying, and disruptive. I also have tried to contact the TD or tournament with not much help. One reply I got was, "come on bambi, we would do it for you!" Well, guilt got the better part of me so I stayed that one and played the last 5 boards.......but the other ones I announced I could not play and logged off. It's very unfortunate this happens, not sure what can be done about it. -
I too direct here on BBO. It can be very hectic, adjustments, substitutions, calls every round! I have been in that situation many times. What I will do is give AVE to the board, then when I get time (hopefully) will go and review the board ( and review it again!), and properly adjust.
