Soloway's actual holding was ♠5, ♥J54,♦32,♣AQT6543. It was bd19 in the round of 8, seg 4 of Nickell v Schwartz. All available at the Vugraph Project :)
-
Got this info now  . It will be included in the files on Nikos's site.
-
It was shown on Vugraph - Gromov won by 4 (142 - 138) - exciting with Mahaffey gaining 20 Imps over the last 7 boards but didn't quite make it. Denis
-
Can someone please give N/S and E/W in Open room for the 4th segment of R16 (Cayne v Mahaffey) as the Vugraph archive is missing the info? Thanks Denis
-
That is very good news Jan - so if the internet conection is reasonable we should get an excellent broadcast with that team of operators :) Thanks for your great committment to Vugraph. Denis

As Roland points out we had coverage of the rounds of 64 and 32 last year - you can see the details on Nikos's site here : http://www.sarantakos.com/bridge/vugraph/2006/2006-spin.html But last year in the equivalent thread to this, Roland had the Vugraph schedule as early as June and when the event happened we were all full of praise for the ACBL and the best Vugraph coverage they had ever provided. I just don't understand why things have gone backwards - presumably it's much the same team (headed by Rick Beye) who are still in charge. Denis

Just looking at the 1965 WC book - pages 13 and 14 where the Great Britain systems are described. The Little Major (Reese - Flint) - THREE complete columns are devoted to the description. Acol System (Played by all partnerships except Reese - Flint) - this gets about a quarter column.

Interesting discussion and generally agrees with what Larry Cohen was saying on the commentary. But for me it doesn't explain the other side i.e. why some good established pairs keep playing together in the event - in particular Levin/Weinstein who are always near the top of the auction ; look at their auction places in their winning years - 2007 (47K) top, 2002 (33K) 4th, 1999 (36.5K) 4th. Interestingly in 1999 Lauria/Versace sold for $56K - was that a record? Yet 8 years later the top pair go for $47K - is there less money about now? Denis

Thanks Uday for your generous offer :) Thanks Glen for the info (just what I needed) - you were the only one to respond - so a clear winner :) Denis

So far *nil* response for player names In Session 2 - very disappointing - does nobody want a good record of this event? Anyway I've gone through the commentaries and hope I've got most of the names. Can somebody out there *please* help for Session 4 i.e. the evening (Vegas time) session. Denis
-
Thanks Roland, I think I'm OK now for producing Vugraphs for both tables from Session 1. I'll be asleep for Session 2 so I'd be grateful for any help from US members in keeping a record of the player names at both tables (preferably in the Order N/S and E/W) in Session 2. Please post here or email me. The finished Vugraphs will be on Nikos's site. Thanks Denis

The Cavendish Pairs is difficult to record properly because (i) the BBO software doesn't capture player names in the log files and more importantly (ii) because of security only a disk for 3 boards is given to the operator at any time rather than the boards for a full session which would be the case for a less money rich event. The difficulties are well explained by Susan Dhoty here : http://forums.bridgebase.com/index.php?showtopic=7964 Last year was particularly bad and all that was recorded in the Vugraph archives was the final 3 boards in each session. However a better job could be done for this most prestigious of Pairs events. It will need some help from the operator(s) who will need to manually save each round - as explained by Susan. I don't know who is operating in Vegas this year but perhaps Roland or Uday could ask them to help out. Also if there are several tables being shown, could the operators make sure to distinguish between them.

Out of interest, does anyone know how I could record the file to my hard drive yet it didn't appear in the BBO Vugraph index?

File sent to Kitty.

In Eric Kokish's ante-bellum assessment from the WBF book he says "Iceland's aura was extremely positive, and they had been playing better bridge than anyone else over the course of the tournament" One significant problem area for Iceland was that they would have to cope with the Suspensor system used by Balicki/Zmuszinki - the "Passing Poles". You can see how they did here at the link below where Gerben has so far provided Vugraphs of the first five segments: http://www.sarantakos.com/bridge/vugraph/1991/1991-bb.html

Perhaps BBOers who are ACBL members ( especially in the St Louis area) could lobby their representatives to get things moving. As well as commentators they are going to need experienced Vugraph operators - and this shouldn't be left to last minute appeals in the Daily Bulletin. Hopefully the ACBL will have asked for a decent internet connection when they booked the venue.

I don't see anything scheduled so far in the Vugraph schedule for the Vanderbilt teams in St Louis. Are we likely to get some coverage? Denis

Thanks for quick response :) Denis

There is a recent file with name starting :D906892517 followed by a lot (100+)of ?? which is making it very difficult to read file info, such as size and date. for the rest of the index. Could this file be modified or deleted please. Denis

Nearly all the Vugraphs, without commentary, are available on Nikos Sarantakos's site at: http://www.sarantakos.com/bridge/vugraph.html. They usually take a few days to process but Nikos does a superb job. Hopefully someday soon Fred will get round to sorting the commentary problems :) Denis

I thought it went very smoothly - well done to yourself and Dan :). However it was a little fast for me - I think it took about 1hr 10mins - maybe 90 mins would be a better target.
-
It would be great if we had an index to all these great reviews - any volunteers? I'm looking for a review of "Winning Card Play" by Kelsey - I think I've seen it here but I'm going to have to go through the thread page by page :)

The SAYC article by Sally Brock on this link is a good conversion kit if you are switching from Acol. http://www.mrbridge.co.uk/library/library.shtm Lots of other useful articles as well :(
-
When I learned Acol some 45 years ago that was the way the direct cue bid was played - you needed a rockcrusher and it was a game forcing bid. But that was stone age Acol and things have moved on a long way since then. In the UK I don't think even dinosaurs play it that way anymore :(

I don't know if this has always been so but there is no "show double dummy analysis" under the GIB button for files in the Vugraph archive. It works OK for .lin files on my hard drive. Denis
