  1. I initially thought the same, but don't Meckwell play *upside-down* suit preference?
  2. 2016 Spingold Street v. Nickell, board 29 NS Meckwell, EW Bessis/Volcker [hv=pc=n&s=st64hq4dt9cak7654&w=sa92hk93dakq832c8&n=skq875hj865d54cj2&e=sj3hat72dj76cqt93&d=n&v=b&b=13&a=pp2c(precision)2ddrp3cp3nppp]399|300[/hv] South (Meckstroth) led the ♣A and North (Rodwell) followed with the jack. Any thoughts as to what this card indicates? On Vugraph Al Hollander suggested (with some doubt) that it was attitude.
  3. Dunno, next time opener will have QJx KJxxxx Ax Ax (arguably a worse hand) and game would look decent.
  4. Pairs (sectional). [hv=pc=n&s=sq84hkq7632da8ca5&n=sk73ht5dq932ckq84&d=w&v=e&b=16&a=ppp1hp1np2hp3hp4hppp]266|200[/hv] Your thoughts after the ♣J lead?
  5. I claim responsibility for opening 2N :-) 4♦ showed a (real) second suit by partnership agreement, so that seems appropriate here. We had no agreement about a direct 6♣ but as mentioned by akwoo, 5♣ would (likely?) be a cue for diamonds after which it would be hard to convey the excellent club suit. 1♣ followed by 2♦ may sound attractive but where do you go after 1♣-1♥ 2♦-3♦ (positive) ? (by agreement, 4♦ by either player would now be optional minorwood, asking partner whether he likes his hand for slam purposes and, if he does, how many keycards he holds.)
  6. I took a costly sac and induced my partner to take another costly sac (by showing more distribution that I had) so... it's also on me :)
  7. Matchpoints, 2/1. [hv=pc=n&s=saht865daq986432c&d=w&v=b&b=4&a=p1sp2dp2s(exactly%205!s)p3dp3np]133|200[/hv] Do you agree with forcing to game? (Normal opening style, balanced 11s are mostly not opened. You had an invitational jump to 3♦ available.) Do you pull?
  8. [hv=pc=n&s=sa5hakqj8da63c863&n=sjt9873h6dkq8542c&d=w&v=e&b=16&a=ppp1hp1sp]266|200[/hv] Thoughts? At the table, we reached 4H+3 for a near-top after I jumped to 3H in an (questionable?) attempt to rightside 3N and they failed to lead a trump. The optimal spot seems to be 6H at MPs and 6D at IMPs.
  9. Edited: weak-only multi. We were playing ACBL defense 2 (we're not playing against multi often enough to make it worth it to have our own custom defense I'd say).
  10. You might decide that this hand is too strong for a short suit invite (planning to respect partner's signoff) (see mike777's answer).
  11. [hv=pc=n&s=sq6hdqj764cak9863&d=e&v=n&b=2&a=2d(weak only multi)3c3h(p%2Fc)d(responsive)3s]133|200[/hv] Agree with 3♣? What now? [hv=pc=n&s=sqj98743ht87dacak&d=e&v=0&b=14&a=1c]133|200[/hv] How many spades? EDIT: If you choose 1♠, what's your general plan for the followups? Jump to 3/4? Compete at the lowest level? [hv=pc=n&s=skt65hq7dj9876ck6&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1h2d]133|200[/hv] Double? (what do you do over 3♣?) Trap pass? 2N? [hv=pc=n&s=saj974h54dakqtca9&d=e&v=n&b=2&a=3c]133|200[/hv] 4♦ would be 5M5♦. Do you pretend you mis-sorted? [hv=pc=n&s=sakqt96h4dkt7cq82&d=e&v=n&b=2&a=p1sp2s(wide%20ranging%20%5B6-9%5D)p]133|200[/hv] Invite? (you can show shortness) Blast to game?
  12. We lost by 35. I only needed two boards to give away 36 :(
  13. 2C-then-2S promises a side suit for me (... could be hearts though) so I guess 2N could promise support for both minors, typically 2=3=4=4?
  14. There's a pretty decent writeup by Andrew Gumperz on Bridge Winners. Here is what I play, it works reasonably well: 1M... ... 2C = NAT or BAL GF, does not deny 4S over 1H (but denies 5S) ... 2other = GF, usually at least HTxxx (or possibly HHHx) 1M-2C... (writing shapes for 1S opening but you get the idea) ... 2D = 5(332) 12-14 or 18-19 ... 2M = M+D ... 2oM = M+oM; 1H-2C-2S does not show extras (because 2N=6M, you run into issues with 4S-6H hands otherwise) ... 2N = 6M (we also play other 1M-2below auctions) ... 3C = 5224 exactly ... 3other = SPL, typically 5(31)4 ... 3M = self-sufficient suit 1M-2C; 2D... ... 2oM = "4SF", typically not fit and lacking some stopper (now check for stoppers) ... 2M = 3crd BAL GF raise, typically not a real club suit ... 2N = NAT BAL no fit, stoppers (now bid values if extras) ... 3m = NAT ... 3M = "picture jump", raise with real club suit 1M-2C; 2D-2M... ... 2N = suggests 3N, typically poor trumps (e.g. Jxxxx AJx Kx KJx) -- responder can check for stoppers. ... others = NAT I think being able to confidently diagnose whether to play in 3N instead of 4M is a pretty big gain, more than the inference that 2/1 in another suit shows a real suit.
  15. I do like the idea of partner returning the ♣Q to clarify his holding. Say he returned it instead of a low club. What now?
  16. From today's BBO/JEC game: [hv=pc=n&n=s972hj76dakq74ct5&e=skt8ha8dj6caj9843&d=s&v=e&b=3&a=2sp3sppp]266|200[/hv] T1: ♥K ♥6 ♥8 ♥2 T2: ♣6 ♣5 ♣A ♣2 T3: ♥A ♥3 ♥4 ♥7 Standard leads + UDCA. Would you have overtaken at trick 1? What does partner's carding under the ♥A show? How do you defend from there?
  17. I can play, but haven't heard back from my regular partner so far.
  18. gqc6 and I will come back, if we're not taking over other people's spots :-)
  19. Lost by 31. Bunch of slam swings, plus the usual misplays.
  20. Mentioned today on the French Federation forum: The team will be T. Bessis/Volcker, Combescure/Rombaut, de Teissières/Lhuissier, who just finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th of the open selection. (The first pair, Lorenzini/Quantin, is unavailable.)
