Craziest Two Suiter I've Ever Seen....Can It Reach Slam?
Bad_Wolf replied to ajfonty's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
I once held AKQJTxxx - - AKJxx and RHO opened 3H. I was young, 7S was -2 :( -
In NZ and Australia (BTW the language is pronounced 'Strain' :) ) 3 ♥ would most often show hearts. Now partner also thought that and raised 3H to 4; so what was the reply to 4S? I know I know, "can't be anything else" etc, but is that really the case? Can't someone, absent UI, be rethinking the wisdom of opening a weak 2 and now be trying to catch up with a cue?

2c benji will be legal, but I wouldn't do it. I would be surprised if opening 5 or 6 clubs wasn't the winning action at the table.

So yet another Ghestem screw up, confusion reigns, the opposition end up hosed and the perpetrators walk away laughing. Forget all the technicalities, this is the sort of farcical situation that provides no motivation for pairs to remember their methods and leaves players frustrated, embarrassed and upset. I have every sympathy for VixTD and would throw the book at EW. I for one believe that Wolf is right. This sort of thing ruins the game and if directors don't jump on it it won't ever go away. More soberly I agree with aguahombre and blackshoe.

I've had a lot of dealings with the cops over the years (and before the right wing &^%$wits around here jump on me I am not a criminal). Sorry but half of them are just bogans who get off on bullying unarmed people. These thugs are paid by us to protect us, and yet around here the gang you are most likely to get killed by drive fast cars, blare sirens and swagger more than Tyson. Talk about cowards. No one forced them to take up this 'career'. Why is it too much to ask for a bit of professionalism.

multi users miss big fits quite often. recently we picked up a double slam swing when a player with ♠AKQxxxx could not believe his pard had a weak 2 in spades :D Oh and we scored +1 in our slam after a trick one ruff-sluff! yay

Gidday Wayne, well done today- a great finish after a slow start :) Anyway I pass. second choice double but Im not sure what this will achieve, do I want a heart lead against 3n? Well maybe I do. Look forward to others replies...

WBF VP scale changes
Bad_Wolf replied to MickyB's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Very cute. However the mathematician in me wishes that the score approached 20 asymptotically. -
Back in the 80s I was taught that accepting a trick here was tantamount to cheating. I would still never do it. I would kick the ***** out of anyone who accepted the claim and folded up their cards.

Does anybody know?
Bad_Wolf replied to Bad_Wolf's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Ah, thanks. -
Hi, does anybody have any information on a possible score adjustment? Open round 5: NZL v USA, board 11, Ware/Tislevoll - Rodwell/Meckstroth The vugraph archive has Michael (Ware) near the end of apparently making 4S, then an announcement of: vugraphzbh: declarer renounce .( vugraphzbh: 1 down rectified by director Does anybody know what happened here? Thanks a lot Gerry

Not a great club evening
Bad_Wolf replied to ahydra's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
1) pass, you are in a reasonable spot, no guarantee of improving it 2) who knows, presumably a club blows a trick 3) east's double is silly, bid your hearts 4) 2h ok but wimpy, 3h more like it first at fav 5) easy pass of 2h, where are 10 tricks coming from? -
Harden up, we are not children.

I once played, in the context of a big club system, that 1♦ promised a FIVE card major and 1M was exactly 4. With 5♠4♥ we opened 1♦ but with 5♥4♠ opened 1♠. Unplayable you might think, but occasionally spectacularly successful.

Perhaps they will remember to alert next time.

Misexplanation. Hit them hard or they will never learn. Of course in NZ you give the opposition a telling off for having the cheek to call the director and possibly scare off some uneth...um inexperienced players.

I consider Law 74 to be the most frivolous, stupid and downright dangerous Law in bridge. Throw it out now. Am I the only one heartily sick of the politeness police?

Harden up. If you recieve abuse just yell back.

Bidding is 80% of bridge
Bad_Wolf replied to dickiegera's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Agree completely that card play is, at any given time in bridge evolution, more important than bidding. However it seems to me that bidding has improved over time to such an extent that even methods regularly scoffed at like SAYC are far superior to methods that Ely and Jo for instance employed. Example, a few local players around here are advocating penalty doubles of all preempts (2 level and up). I am trying hard to stop the spread of this virus, but my point is that it would be easy enough to come up with a set of agreements and style decisions that are now acknowledged as hopeless but that at one time or another had a loyal following. I think we forget how much good bidding is worth because good players - in an absolute sense - generally bid so well! -
As it happens I was directing in another room and was consulted on this ruling. Certainly I considered possible logical alternatives to pass and what might happen afterwards. It was my judgement that west will likely insist on spades at every turn, and it is possible that we would have considered 5s-1 had there been only 10 tricks available, but there was always 12.

Im not so sure. We had this auction 2 months ago and pard had xx Qxxx Kxxxx xx for her 1d and 2dX might well have made. She didnt pass slowly however.

"You've been down this road Neo, you know exactly where it leads..." - Trinity We are hoping to play some ACBL tourneys online. We play 2M as weak 6 cards but sometimes 5 NV and occasionally 5 Vul. We might open 2H green on any of: x QJ9xxx xxx xxx x KQJxx xxxx xxx or even rarely at Fav: xx KQJT9 xxx xxx We open 2H on these because our judgement (rightly or wrongly) is that they are all worth a weak two. Is this legal? If we open 2H on example two will be thrown out for opening an illegal Muideberg?
