OK Wayne.

Firstly the bidding, even though you didn't ask -

The first X is aggressive

The raise to 3H is a poor bid

The raise to 3S is a *#$ appalling bid

The raise to 4H is in line with the rest of the auction

1) Bad lead - you are lucky as it costs nothing on this board.

2) Yes

3) Lead of the 8 is 2nd highest or highest from a bad suit for me

4) This auction calls for a trump lead

The first X is aggressive

OH, I thought it was well judged :)

what is wrong with it? or is it just aggresive not wrong?

The best it can ever achieve is to compete for a part score (you have 10HCP opposite a passed hand. The bad things it can do include to pinpoint every outstanding card for the opposition, or encourage your partner to compete and get doubled.

And if competing for the part score is right, there is no reason to think that you need to compete right now. eg If the bidding starts 1 2 and passed round to you, then competing is much safer.

Double is aggressive which means that there is no need to bid your hand again, that is why the subsequent 3 bid is poor.

I think a trump lead is clear - it will cut down dummy's ruffs and declarer will play partner for any honours anyway. As this contract is likely to be tight, a safe lead should be sought.

The problem with the club is that it will find the Q for declarer when he holds the 9- play safe, lead a trump!

A guideline on whether doubling or not is:

Would you open with the hand or not ?

If the answer is Yes AND you have the appropriate shape for the double, then go ahead and double.

If you would NOT open the hand, then better avoiding the double.

Personally, I do not consider North's hand worth an opening hand, so I would not have doubled (BTW, I might consider doubling with 4441 and a good ten count, if I can contribute 2 defensive tricks, just in case my pard penalty passes) ; in the given hand I might have instead overcalled 1S.

Hence, since I think Duble is quite an overbid, you may guess that I consider the 3S raise as a suicidal attempt :-)

=================================

Of course, this would be a perfectly legitimate double *if you were a passed hand*.
