I don't know if these have appeared here before. Anyway, it can't hurt to think about them again :D

1) AK109xx versus x, need 5 tricks

2) AQ98x versus xx, need 4 tricks

3) AQ98x versus xx, need 3 tricks.

These are much easier to see after some expert answers :D

1. low to 10

2&3 pass, I'd start by playing low to 9.

I think I can learn these combinations but I sure have a hard time working them out from scratch. Knowing the %split is the first step I guess.

Can someone please describe the steps you take to work them out.

Justin, these are way over your head, don't even try answering them!

Jilly, for the first one I can see 2 possible lines. I: play them from the top, and II: play low to the ten, and later play them from the top. Now try to see for which holdings the first line wins, and for which holdings the second line wins. I'll write my analysis hidden:

Either line will work when the suit splits 3-3, when there is a QJ tight, or when there is Hx onside. We don't need to include these holdings in our comparison.

The first line (cashing ace and king first) will also win when there is Hx offside. There are 8 such holdings (4 possible small cards for each of the two possible honors).

The second line wins when there is QJxx onside. There are 6 such holdings (try counting them, "4 choose 2" for those who know what that means).

Neither line wins for any other holding, as far as I can see, so it seems to me that line 1 is better. Sorry Kathryn.

Play AK from top.

3-3 split is irrelevant, so we play against the 4-2 split.

AK from top drops any Hx.

The alternative of low to the 9 is worse, since finessing the QJ cannot be repeated; this loses vs Hx offside (2/3 of the relevant 4-2 splits) and it wins only if QJxx onside, which is less likely (4/9 of the relevant 4-2 splits).

2) AQ98x versus xx, need 4 tricks

3) AQ98x versus xx, need 3 tricks.

Low to the 9 and low to the 8.
