How should bidding go?

West opens 1 and North Doubles

(1) What do u bid as South - would 2 show 2 places to play?

(2) I bid 2 then after partner bids 3 what do u bid?

(3) I bid 3 forcing ( asking for stop more info)... Should I bid 3?, Should Partner bid 3 and should it be natural?

5 makes but so does 4+1...

Steve

PS For info West had 4 and 5's so everyone else 'should' have found their spade fit grrrrr as they would open 1...

2 instead of Double is clear. It is a common mistake to double with hands like this to show a strong hand. An overcall does not deny a good hand.

As to responding to double, 2 is probably best: can play both majors.

After 2 3 I bid 3. Forcing and natural. This also suggests the problem in and at the same time shows your distribution.

Double is OK in my opinion, but I'd prefer 2.

In response to the double, I think 2 is much better than 2. I would expect 2 to promise a stronger hand (though this one isn't too far away because the fit is likely to be good).

3 seems a poor choice: 3 would have been much more descriptive.

Play Raptor, the bidding starts,

(1) - 1NT and now spades will not be missed.

BTW, Misho and I play Raptor differently than most. It promises an opening hand or better. We also inclube top-bottom two suites can be very strong if we have 5+ in the top suit. Then if partner tries to signoff in lower suit, we bid the higher suit to show the exceptional hand. In this style, we overcall in the major with the weaker hand when 5-5 in the top suit and the bottom suit. This is certainly a non-standard treatments, but we use raptor with 5-5 hands with top and bottom suits, unusual NT with 55 lower suits, and michaels 5-5 with top suits. But with 4-5, 4-6, 4-7 we use raptor with either four card major or either minor.

I also disagree with double, but about south's bids...

I wouldn't bid 2, 1 is possible, and so is 3 showing a 5 card suit, 2 should be stronger that this, and 2 shows only 4 cards while denying 4.

Ok, lets say you don't play anythign like my methods (like 90% of the world), you bid 2 showing just s and nto a subminimal hand, partner bids 3 and you have to make a decision.

It depends on how do you normally double, if you normally double with any 16+ instead of bidding your suit, then you better pass 3 quickly, you are already too high.

If you double with stronger hands then your 7 HCP become golden and game is in order, time to show your shape with 3 (wich shows 5+ and 4 at least) adn let partner decide wich is the best contract.

I believe my follow-ups to doubles are fairly standard. Basically:

Jump in a suit = about 9-11 points, maybe a bit less with a five-card suit

Cue = any GF hand, or inv (about the same 9-11) asking partner to pick a suit

About the actual bidding:

The first X is pretty bad. You're pretty likely to be hung in hearts here. I'd prefer to overcall 2 as a two-level overcall certainly can be a good hand.

The 2 bid is somewhat pushy on values, but with a 5-card suit and no wastage in diamonds it is okay. I would slightly prefer 2, showing (in this case) both majors and invitational values, but that action does commit us to the three level and it might be better to play 2 in a 5-3 rather than 3 in a 4-4 when partner is min.

The 3 call should be forcing in this auction; it shows a "power double" hand, and your jump response should guarantee enough for game opposite such a hand. The fact that you stretched for your jump and that partner stretched for the double aren't relevent.

I much prefer 3 to 3, and think this is the clearest "mistake" of the auction. Bidding out shape is best here.
