Tales from Reno 1

Finished my first day playing in the Reno Sectional. I have to say that after playing in England for 3 years, I find it quite a culture shock to be playing in the U.S. again. We decided to play in the A flight and couldn't believe that no one alerts their bids or uses the stop card. People ask questions on our alerts whether or not they intend to bid. Partner psyched on one hand and after the board was over the opponent called the director and asked if psyching was allowed in this tournament. This is supposed to be the 1500+ section. Anyway, it will take some getting used to.

[hv=d=w&v=n&s=s8hq10952d8732ck72]133|100|Scoring: MP

P - (1) - P - (2)

P - (3) - P - (4)

All Pass[/hv]

You ask what the 3 bid is and are told first that it's natural and then that it's help suit and then that they don't know. You don't press any further. What is your lead?

Not sure if this is ATTACK or SUICIDE.

I'd lead the 8. Seems like LHO probably has heart shortage, since he has accepted a natural game try despite my rather large number of decent hearts. I'll try to cut down the ruffs and score some heart tricks. I've found that underleading kings at matchpoints is usually a bad idea, and I don't think this is the time for a passive diamond lead.

At the table I would probably lead a trump (giving away the trump suit). I would've liked to know more about what was meant by this partnership by the term "natural, help needed GT" and what the partnership defined as help. It is reasonable to smell a rat, but these days I am concerned about asking for further clarification as being deemed to be UI for partner.

Echog, you are lucky to find a sectional tornament that starts on a Wednesday. Around these parts (Philadelphia) it is almost always friday-saturday-sunday. So if you were here you'd be playing in a club game.

Also, according to the tourny's web site (http://www.acekingqueen.com/nextevent.htm) it was a stratified game, meaning that players of all experiences are in the same section.

Here's a link to the ACBL web site for a description of the type of pairs games:

http://www.acbl.org/play/pairGamesExplained.html#25

Games are commonly one of "stratified", "flighted" or (yes) "stratiflighted"

In my experience, many people who play "help suit" game tries use the bid only to discourage a lead in the "help" suit, sort of a mini-psyche. So put me down for a lead.

that's what I meant by smelling a rat, that the heart bid was phoney.

next time need to trust instincts.
