Easy pass

This is not the hand or the scoring methods to show a fit. (My honors are all in partner's suit, which degrades my defensive strength)

Showing a fit will help the opponents to evaluate their hands and might even push them into a miracle game.

Some facts about partner and if lebensohl is in use would be helpful. Knowing the sort of hand my partner would compete with would be helpful. In any case I raise, game is not impossible and especially if opps play leb. My RHO could be bidding 2S on Q5th or 6th and out. Maybe my partner has some 6-4 hand or better. I must admit that raising my allow the opps to reach some thin game, but I also expect to hold the opening lead with K of H and be able to see the best defense. My game is more important than the enemy.

3.

Sorry, I don't get Pass. Why am I throwing 6 IMPs away on this likely partscore swing? Opponents have 8-9 spades and we probably have 9 - 10 hearts. Pard's values are sitting over the NT bidder and points appear to be balanced between the sides.

I think its important that we get pard off to the right lead against any spade contract, even if we don't buy the contract.

Presumably, partner has a hand with no more than 6 losers to be coming in over a strong NT. If looks at though 2 of those losers are in spades, and 1 in hearts, so he holds 2-3 losers in the minor suits.

This looks about right on the auction. I can only see two bids that make sense. Pass or 4H and I think pass is better - not because I would worry about being doubled in 4H but this action might propel the opponents into a "save" that makes. The the other problem is 4S might not be making if the opponents go ahead and bid it after my pass.

Realistically, this hand is probably a 9/9 hand where both sides can make a partscore, but as they have the boss suit a bid from my hand gives them the option of re-evaluating and bidding game. I wouldn't be concerned about the result of defending a partscore on this hand - I would be about defending a game

so I'm giving as little help to the opponents as possible with Pass - and I hope I did with without giving UI. :P

One of my first "lessons" (given by pards who wondered what it might take for me to show support.....) was not to worry about a balancing or competetive bid getting the opps to a makeable game that they were not going to bid themselves. Maybe this is very MP oriented, but pard is way better off to hear your 3H bid than not......

matchpoints are a whole different situation. It matters a lot less whether or not I push the opps to a makeable game. If we are being out-bid, we are getting a poor result when the opps go plus when we can go plus be it -170 or -420.

3. God gives you strong four card support, show it.

Advantages,

1 - it can still be our hand

2 - it might push them too high

3 - it confuses the spade raises, as it takes away an invitational 3S bid

Disadvantage, it tells LHO that his partner is probably short in hearts.

Note, I use 2NT over 2 here as the game invite, so this 3 is competitive.
