Jacoby 2 NT

Recommended Posts

Could anybody give me a brief desciption of Jacoby 2 NT?

I believe that if my partner bids 1 major, then I bid 2 NT if I have 4 card support and at least game values.

I am used to playing something called Steens 2 NT, but I don't think many play it here at BBO. So I would like to know something I can play with my BBO partner.

Thanks in advance :)

Marianne

Rather than reinvent the wheel, here is a link to an excellent description of basic Jacoby 2NT

http://www.bridgeguys.com/Conventions/LimitRaises.html

Be aware that it has been tweaked by many people. In bridge base online advanced, it isn't played, and Mr. Marty Bergen's version is gaining acceptance.

After you read the link, if you have any question, I am sure people here will be happy to answer them for you.

And Marianne, WELCOME to the BBO forum.

There's quite a few 2NT raises these days. There's standard and modern Jacoby, Stenburg, Bergen, Martel-Stansby 2NT, Romex 2NT, and probably others that I'm forgetting. The important part is knowing something that you'll use in regular partnerships - don't play something you're not comfortable using.

Is there a version which is tailored to Precision, with its 11-15 hcp range?

I have thought of something like:

3 of another suit: singleton, max values (14-15, or 13 with a good 6 card suit)

4 of the major: Min, with or without a singleton

3 of the major: Max hand, good suit (2 out of top 3 honors)

3NT: Max hand, bad suit

Min/max subject to hand quality adjustment, of course.

Any better suggestions?

The way I play it is: 1M - 2NT = 12+ HCP with support (4+), no singleton/void

(1M promises only 4-card)

answers:

3m = singleton m (from semi-maximal)

3M = maximum, no singleton/void

3NT = 4333

4m = void m

4M = minimum

After 1S - 2NT - ?

3H = singleton

4H = void

After 1H - 2NT - ?

3S = singleton or void S
