Bidding in competition

Recommended Posts

Live MP's I hold as East:

[hv=d=w&v=n&s=sk10872h54d4ckj765]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv]

West North East South

1   pass   1    pass

1NT pass   2   2

3   3      3   all pass

Partner opens 1 which promises 4+clubs and rebids 1NT which is 12-14 HCP. We are *not* playing any conventions over 1x-1y-1NT.

When she bid 3 club i was thinking: OK she has a good reason to compete, or else she would leave it to me to compete to 3 clubs, since I would rarely let them play 2 diamonds in MP when we have an eight card fit in clubs. So she has 5 clubs or maybe she could have 4 clubs and two small diamonds?

Bidding 3 spades i was thinking: We have a 10 card fit in clubs. I want to compete to 4 clubs, but maybe we have an eight card fit in spades, so I can just as well show my 5 spades. (If i had 6 spades i wouldnt have bid 2 club in the first place)

What do you think?

All analysises are good, but pd may not think the same thing. I would just bid 4C. Even if pd has 3 spades, 4C should play as good as 3S. Pd didnot bid 2S after 2D. This indicates very strongly that he has at most doubleton spades.

Bridge would be much easier if we dont test pd with questions we could solve by ourselves.

Hum.. to me is obvious that a hand that jump bids 3S after having signed off in 2C should have some decent club suit to back up his jump.

But yes, unless pard is the sort of person who could reason along these lines, some nr. of clubs is better.

I like your reasoning and 3 at matchpoints. To whereagles: 3 is not a jump bid. 2 is obviously a typo. Should have been 3. A couple of you may have forgotten that this is pairs, and I agree with plaur that it's worth trying 3 for three reasons.

1. It scores better if we have a 5-3 fit.

2. Responder doesn't have 6 spades. 2 denied that.

3. If we don't have a fit, opener can still correct to 4.

Can we have a 5-3 fit?

Would P have not bid 2S/2D instead of 3C with 3-card spade support?

Good point, but I am sure that beginners/intermediates are reluctant to support unless they are certain of an 8-card fit. It takes years to understand the benefits of supporting with only 3, and as you may know, it is considered a major crime to do just that in some parts of the world.

I don't think we have an 8 card spade fit, pd would have bid 2 with 3 spades instead of 3.

The 3 bid should be showing 5 good clubs and a strong doubleton is spades like Ax or AQ.

That's what I think.

I am sorry I mentioned it. I don't wish to be accused of having influenced or encouraged anyone to engage in any criminal behavior.
