Gack... I think that you positioned yourself poorly by starting with a double rather than showing shape ASAP. With this said and done, the question for the peanut gallery is whats the best way to recover...

From my perspective, there are two "reasonable" strategies with the hand.

The first is some kind of fit showing action. While I don't know your agreements, I suspect that 3 would show a strong single suited hand, leaving 4 as the fit jump.

Alternatively, it also seems reasonable to consider some form of Heart splinter. (I wouldn't be surprised to see someone launch immediately into exclusion blackwood)

At the end of the day, I'm not sure if there is a "best" call... The 4 splinter tells partner to devalue the AK of Hearts, however, it doesn't really focus attention on the Queen of Clubs. The 4 fit jump lets partner know that Club honors are golden, but makes it more difficult to evaluation Heart controls.

Personally, I lean towards the 4 bid simply because its cheaper. In an ideal world, I'll still be able to apply ERKCB if partner moves forward.

Double showed an overcall in diamonds. Thus, a high level club bid here seems appropriate. I would bid 5 now and let partner decide. Yes, if I think I now have the auction to myself, 4 and then 4 seems a better way to explore for slam. But, I expect LHO isn't finished in this auction.

why did the partnership choose not to bid the 6-card suit first, or 2NT for minors? Let the limited unbalanced hand start to describe his opener at the 3-level?

With the agreement, 4H Kickback RKCB for Diamonds.

With a void in hearts? Is this a commonly accepted, understood, and used bid?

If you play kickback then yes 4h is ace ask...4h at anytime in bidding.

Note this version of kickback =next suit higher over agreed trump suit.

Does this mean you lose 4h as a splinter or cuebid, Yes.

ON this hand I do not care since I am bidding 5clubs

Commonly used, I think not. Uncommonly useful, indeed. Once pard has agreed trumps (in this case you showed some diamonds and he bid them freely) the 4H bid guarantees no 2 quick losers in any suit. You also can stop in 5D whether you are using 1430 or 0314.

I bid 4 and my partner bid 5 wich was doubled by West, who I think was rather lucky to find his partner with singleton , my partner didn't play very safely and finished with -500.

5 can be won by south's hand, but to play in clubs you have to bid the suit twice, or probably 3 times. I think the double of 1 had already doomed us <_<.

Tough hand, we could have bid clubs over RHO bid of negative 1d or bid 4nt to show both minors. I assume one club did not promise clubs?

Pard could have bid 1nt over LHO rebid of 1H.

Great post mortem hand to discuss in the bar.
