Raising Weak Twos

Recommended Posts

Playing sayc with a pickup pd, we bid OK except for one hand. The bidding went:

P-2S(partner)-DBL-3S-4H-4S-DBL-P-P-P

Pd had AK98xx-Qxx-10x-9x. I had Qxx-J8-xx-A10xxxx.

Pd claimed I needed more than I had to raise to 3S - I said I was "just competing".

How do you play 3S in this auction? The vul was unfavorable. What would you have done with my hand, and do vulnerability and the opps double make a difference?

Without the opps double, I would have hesitated due to unfav vul, but probably bid 3S anyway.

Only one other pair was in 4S - also doubled - like us they were down two. A few were in 3S undoubled down

one for a middle score. 4H and 5C by the opps failed by one. 3C was the best contract for the opps.

Your 3s bid is perfect.

The 2s bidder is not allowed to bid 4s, normally preempts don't bid again, an accepted exception is when the preempter has a void in the opps suit.

You can have whatever you want to have for your 3s bid from 0 to 15 from two trumps to four with or without an honor. Your 3s bid is understood as "I bid 3s" and that's all. You may be bidding 3s just to make difficult for them to reach a slam or you may be wanting to double any 4x bid next....

4s is 100% wrong and a common mistake among inexperienced players.

Exactly, weak hand has shown what he's got with his opening, you're just the one who has to determine what level you want to play. Partner may never raise, even if he's maximum. If HE can raise, he SHOULD'VE opened 3S in stead of 2S...
