Change the sound defaults

Recommended Posts

I played with a friend earlier in the week who had downloaded BBO on my advice. He said "this software makes me want to vomit" and when I asked why he cited the sounds. Thw default setting is for all the sounds to be checked and this is overwhelming and offputting.

IMO the default should be a half way house, with some of the sounds selected, but most not.

Some which should be selected imo:

Private chat message received

Your turn to bid or play.

Alert

Explain Call

Undo/Claim/Redeal

It is worth considering having "ignore lobby chat" selected as default too.

I tend to agree about the sounds ;) but surely it's not that difficult to find the way to change settings?-- it took me about 2 minutes the first time i logged on

Many people's technical skills are way below those of most people who use this forum. I am lucky enough to have been brought up with computers - by brother got one for his 6th birthday (I was 3), we had IT classes throughout my education, every job I have had has centred around a computer based workplace etc.

My parents who by no means have zero computer skills would have a lot of trouble adjusting the sounds, especially my mum.

One thing that really annoys me is that every time I install a new version of BBO, my settings as to colours, sounds, ignore chat, display filters, friends logging-in notification, etc. all return to their defaults.

Obviously the way I like things is best and should be adopted by everyone as the default! If that wont be possible, at least can we retain our personalisation settings through software upgrades?

I've been installing all the beta versions posted in the past month or so (except I missed the versions between 4.3.1 and 4.3.5), and I don't think it ever changed my settings. Are you using the updaters or the full installer?

I think I've used the full installer a couple of times. So, you could say, my bad - but nevertheless, even full installer should treat existing data in some way...

BTW, I would strongly suggest changing the "default" sound settings to include only events that are necessary for speedy play - and provide some "low noise" sound scheme.

(I think that "your turn to play, your turn to bid, explain call, call explained" would be the good minimum.)

There is another feature that I really miss - and that is Volume control.

I don't know how is BBO playing sounds, I assume some API calls. Maybe those don't allow you to specify volume (for the individual sound you're playing)....

Could it be possible to use DirectX calls if available? Those would surely allow volume control. (That is, i.e. I want to listen to some music while playing - and I can't possibly tell BBO to be quieter without turning the "wave" playback volume down, which affects the music as well).
