Even if GIB is the only robot we offer, I think our members will be well-served. There is only one other computer bridge program that comes close to GIB in terms of its quality of play (a Dutch program named Jack).

I think you are being a fit unfair to Jack here. GIB is still a great program but it's been two years since any real development was done. In that time Jack has been continuously improved and most people who have both programs, including long-time GIB fans from the GIB discuss group, now consider Jack to be the better program; and it has been World Computer champion for 5 years in a row, which includes a period when GIB was active.

It would be marvellous if this initiative from BBO can generate sufficient interest/revenue to persuade Matt to start work again on GIB. GIB seems to be the only program with the potential to knock Jack off the No.1 spot.

During today's vugraph Walddk would occasionally ask GIB what it would have bid or played. I personally found this to be interesting. He was careful to emphasize the difference between GIB's analysis (which is single dummy) and Deep Finesse's analysis (which is double dummy).

I like this feature but it only seems to work during live vugraph. When I open an existing lin file on my PC there is no GIB button even though I have GIB installed. In contrast the DF button will work - I have DF installed as well but I'm not sure if that's why it works.

1) Agree with Denis0. Jack is really the strongest program around nowadays, I think few people doubt that.

2) I really really like the new GIB feature I must say! Totally wicked

I think it is the right way that GIB uses the user's computer to calculate his move, this will be much faster than have some central computer deal with requests. Running some server based GIBs is possible of course, for some special situations, but running several will be detrimental for the playing strength.

GIB SYSTEM DETAILS

Is there a Schedule of the System which GIB uses in BBO Robot Mode?

I discovered the other day that we were playing against Inverted Minors :)

It seems to be some form of SAYC ... but "tweaked".

Thanks

When FG returns (he is at a tourney) he will address the gib cc issue.

Maybe I should meantion this here too:

I played in main with a human partner and

opps were two very fine GIB's.

I alerted my artificial bids and explained,my

LHO GIB alerted his Pass, happened every time.

They explained in full if I clicked on their bids,

all sorts of possible explanations :)

Even Jack fails the Turing test, IMHO. The kind of mistakes he makes are characteristic: never micounts, but is easily trapped by psyches, even by elementary falsearding.

So are some club players. If you find examples of this, perhaps report these to the Jack team so they can work on it.

Of course they are. If people weren't fooled by psyches and false-cards, they wouldn't be used in the first place.

The Turing test doesn't require the computer to emulate a smart human, just an ordinary one. In fact, it would still be a major achievement just to get a computer to fool you into thinking it's a 10-year-old kid.

We shall see :) Over the next few months we can follow the reports of JacK against International or near International class Dutch players:

If I partner myself against Jack it's easy to psych him out. Just bid his suit then run to my own suit.

A pair playing against 2 GIBS could play HUMs and that would probably psych them out.

If this is how you like to practise your bridge, then, by all means, go ahead.

The bots feel a need on BBO, for sure. They fill in while waiting for a fiend. They don't play a horrible game of bridge. They don't play PERFECT of course. I had this (MisIry) hand today and I am certain the bot blew the play.

[hv=d=e&v=n&n=shadakq985cq97654&w=sa985hqt4dt72ckj8&e=sjt43hkj862dj63c2&s=skq762h9753d4cat3]399|300|Scoring: IMP

West North East South

 -     -     Pass  Pass

 Pass  1    Pass  1

 Pass  3    Pass  5

 Pass  6    Pass  Pass

 Pass

[/hv]

The BOT went down by playing a line that required 2-2 clubs or EAST has club KJx and diamonds no worse than 4-2. This was doubly sad, as only four out of 16 tables found the slam (yes it is biddable without MisIry), and my bot was only declearer in clubs not to take 12 tricks.

While 6C is easily reachable without MisIry, MisIry would have been...

3D - 4H

5C - 5S

6C - Pass

(5S = cuebid at five level, shows value)

6C = if I was interested in spade king, I would have bid 5NT to ask

If south only bids 3H (wimpy in my view), the auction woudl have been very similar

3D - 3H

5C - 5S

6C - Pass

Sigh...

I recall back in the days where I played on the Zone (before setting up BBO, and then forgetting my password on my Zone account (so I can't play there anymore)), I remember the Bots. There were good for waiting on players and reserving seats while waiting for particular players while not delaying play. And, some players prefer to play alone with Bots.

That being said, I don't know about BBO's new bots, but the Bots on the Zone did not bid/play perfectically. Also, it seems so easy to cheat against bots. You can always bid 7NT and claim.

I don't mind playing computer opponents in Chess, but I prefer human partners and opponents in Bridge. That's my opinion. However, there are some good in Bots, like being able to play before having four players arrive at your table, or reserving seats for particular players without delaying play, or just for some good old-fashioned fun practice.

I just hope there aren't too many tainted IMP scores in the MBC because of people bidding and claiming 7NT (even when they don't have the majority of HCP).

Might be good if when watching vugraph you could click a button to ask what GIB would play next (single dummy), next to the one that asks what Deep Finesse would play next (double dummy).

You can push GIB while kibitzing any table (including Vugraph) and it will tell you what it would do (bid or play).

Is there any news on the General System and Convention Card which GIB uses in BBO-BOT mode at present?

Thanks
