Walddk
3NT, what else? Miraculously, I agree with Luis :-) 3NT in 4th seat can show anything and is obviously alertable with a full explanation if asked. Partner never pulls. If I get doubled (how can they?), I may reconsider. Roland
Winstonm
Would there be an advantage to playing solid suit preempts in 4th seat instead of gambling 3N?
luis
Would there be an advantage to playing solid suit preempts in 4th seat instead of gambling 3N? Agreeing with Roland I must say that 3NT in 4th is not exactly gambling is just "to play". Usually you do have a suit but sometimes is just a solid suit without side values and sometimes it's a semisolid suit with side values. If they double I stand the double, nobody could open and now they want to double 3NT? I will think they are trying to scare me.
pigpenz
If i bid it will be 3nt, but i would pass, especially since I have no major suit cards

awm
3♣ seems like a good call to me. Sure, opponents might find a major suit fit over this, but if they do I probably wasn't making 3NT anyway. And it's hard to overcall at the three level as a passed hand. For those bidding 3NT, do you really expect to make it? If partner can't stop both majors, chances are pretty good opponents will lead the major he has xxx in (longest and strongest is a popular lead, not to mention the chance they could lead an ace and switch). I would rate the chances of 3NT making from my side as pretty low. I'm in fourth seat, I want a plus score. Partner can certainly bid 3NT over 3♣, and I expect he will do so a fairly substantial percentage of the time 3NT is making (and it's more likely to make from his side than mine). Curiously, I'd be MUCH more likely to call 3NT in third seat than fourth.

There're 28 HCP left if they are divided pd should have around 9, there're a lot of 9 HCP combinations where 3NT is either cold or has a lot of chances. cherdano
My bidding is 3♣-3NT. Down one if ♥J and one high heart honor is offside (and opening leader finds the low heart lead from AJxx(x) or KJxx(x)), ntp, next. Arend
Winstonm
Another question for you 3N bidders - If 3N is right, shouldn't it be played from the other side?
luis
How many problems in this forum are created by a player not opening light? I mean if you open with 12 why not with good 11? How terrible can the difference be?
Winstonm
How many problems in this forum are created by a player not opening light? I mean if you open with 12 why not with good 11? How terrible can the difference be?Probably about as many as are caused by light openings. ;) For many, myself included, it's not the opening that is so troublesome but the rebids - if I open 1D with this hand, I must either raise a major to 2, rebid a very so-so diamond suit, or rebid 1N - none of these rebids are very satisfactory; however, if I pass and partner opens 1H or 1S, I can bid a natural 2D and describe my hand well in one bid. You picks your poison....... :P Winston

luke warm
i'd have opened the north hand 1nt, but only because there are 4 controls.. i'd expect south to then bid 3nt..
han
Why are you complaining Luis? You were expecting to make 3NT opposite a 9 count, and surprise, partner shows up with a great 11 count! Not to say I don't consider opening with partner's hand automatic.
awm
Wouldn't the same problem occur if we replace north's ♦J with a small diamond? I think it's farfetched to blame north here. And look, we found north with a dead max, a hand most of you would've opened, and 3NT from the south STILL didn't make! Of course, I anticipate the replies... BUT Axx QTx Axxxx xx is such a good ten, and we would open most 11s, shouldn't we also open aq good ten?
Walddk
So they found the lead, and ♥J was off side. What does that prove? Right, nothing. Next time West has KQ10xxKxxxxxxx Sorry, I can't find the heart lead. Can you? Roland

How terrible can the difference be? Well, as so often happens at bridge table, you could save pd for his mistake(assuming he is wrong passing that hand) by opening 1C or 3C. pigpenz
I guess its a matter of trying to figure out the ramifications of what can happen on the +/- imp table, since we are non vul the diff on missing game isnt as much as if we were vulnerable, no matter what it is still a roll of the dice, and -5 isnt gonna a kill us. But over the years opening in fourth seat I have found that alot of people have no idea how good of a hand you really should have, it obiuosly has to be geared to getting to game epsecially 3nt
