Response to 1C

Recommended Posts

As far as I know, Meckwell play something like

1 = -ve

1 = +ve

1 = +ve

1NT = +ve

2 = +ve

2 = +ve NT

And Hamman Soloway play a step response for strength.

It appears to me that Meckwell is clearly superior.

Any merits for Hamway way or similar e.g. control response?

you are close

meckwell plays 1NT = clubs & 1S = hearts

There's a significant difference between the two systems: Hamway play 4-card majors.

See: Meckwell system

From there:

1: 5+s or balanced 11-13

1: 5+s

1NT: 5+s

2: 5+s

2: 8-10 balanced

2: 14+ balanced or unusual hand type

2: 4-4-4-1 shape

2NT+: minimum 3 suiters (?)

I love their 2 response - they often bounce to 3NT right after it and nobody knows much about declarer's hand type.

Best is Dilks system:

1C -

1D = neg

1H = S, may be canape in any suit

1S = H, may be canape in any suit

1NT = 11+ bal

2C = 8-10 bal

2D = C, may be canape in D

2H = D, may be canape in C

2S = Majors/minors 5/5

2NT = 8-10 any 4441

3C = any solid suit

3D+ = 11+ 4441 shapes, suit below singleton

I quite like my system

1C -1D neg

1H = 4+ spades, unbalanced (mayb 5422 with 4 or 5 spades)

1S = balanced, 3 suited short in a major or diamonds

1NT = hearts and clubs, or single suited hearts

2C = reds

2D = clubs

2H+ = minors

Here's mine:

1D - art negative (3 suiters go through here too)

1H - spades, clubs or 15+ balanced

1S - hearts, diamonds, or 12-14 balanced

1NT - 5-5 two suiter

2C - single suited G/F with no 4 card outside suit

2D - 8 to bad 12, balanced

2H/S - constructive weak jump shifts

2NT - 15+ unbalanced

3C/D - fragments, Flannery hands, nonminimum

3H/S - stiffs, 54 in minors, nonminimum

And another

1D Negative All other responses GF

1H One 5 card or longer suit and no singleton/void

1S No 5 card or longer suit

1N 5+ clubs, no second 5 card suit and a singlton/void

2C 5+ diamonds, no second 5 card suit and a singleton/void

2D 5+ hearts, no second 5 card suit and a singleton/void

2H 5+ spades, no second 5 card suit and a singleton/void

2S 5+ 5 in minors

2N 5+ 5 at least 1 major

Opener can relay for further definition or bid naturally.
