New BPO poll coming

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry to hear that you will not participate, Whereagles, I think your opinions on bidding issues are sound and you could make a positive contribution to the poll.

I always enjoy reading whereeagles opinions, and maybe you can change your mind and still participate. Having said that, whereeagles hasn't exactly struck me as a sound bidder

I'm sure I'll always score below average because my ideas on bidding are often different than mainstream opinions.

LOL --- mine too (especially when the answers are according to BBO Adv ) :( BUT it doesn't stop me attempting to get them right :)

i don't see that it matters much.. before the results are known, most of us defend our answers... if anyone cared they could always total up someone's score... it wouldn't bother me a bit for my score to be shown

I suck at defensive play.

Somehow I doubt the validity of this assertion.

Here-in lies one of the problems with bidding polls such as these when viewed as a contest. Credit is given for predicting as much as possible what the majority of the panel will bid and/or say about the hand. Veer to far from that and you lose many points even if your rationale is totally sound or at least makes more sense than the mainstream responses. However, unless I very much misunderstood the reasons for these polls (or "contests"), we are not striving to build the best mouse trap here, but instead trying to establish a wider base of guidelines, commonality or understanding among a greater number of people who will agree to play BBO Basic or Advanced. ( so that there will be fewer gross misunderstandings, frustration, and better results (and happier players  ). These polls are not to prove one person's approach to be the best mouse trap (although I feel that a truly creative and effective suggestion/ method for handling a difficult bidding situation should be recognizied and reinforced.) It's to increase the level of agreement among the greatest number of players at as high a level of quality as possible.

or so I thought

probably wrong again,..oh, well (sigh)

Well, ok.. When I'm concentrated my defense is good. But if I'm tired, my 'autopilot' makes defensive mistakes frequently

i just want to know why people bid what they bid, to better understand the thought processes that go into judgment calls

That may not be the main purpose of the problems, but it sure is the most useful thing one can take out of them.
