How to evaluate and bid this hand

Recommended Posts

I had this rather/possibly/hopefully impressive looking hand recently but...

[hv=pc=n&s=saq9653hadqcqt842&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=1sp1n(forcing)p]133|200[/hv]

I considered bidding at the 2 or 3 level in Spades and Clubs. Concerned about being passed at 2 and partner getting too excited if I bid 3

It looks a lot stronger than it is in many ways and I had even considered a pre-empt - strange shape

It is unlikely to be passed out in 2 - there are so many red cards missing - so that is what I am going to bid. Bidding anything else just looks dumb. In the absence of having Gazzilli on board, the hand, even though it is 6-5, is not that strong, so I would introduce the suit at the two level. If partner now gives preference to , we are then worth another bid, but not before. It could be a horrible misfit with partner having 1552

Thx for the responses

2C will be responded to with 2D and 2S will be passed

I bid 3S :) Will fill you in more later - and I was very worried about neglecting my clubs

But for me I could easily have opened 4 Spades or anything really - will post the hand tomorrow - I found it interesting anyway :)

My rebids at the 3-level show 13-16, 6 or fewer modified losers and 5-5 or 6+. In this case I'll try 3 and if corrected to 3 I raise to 4 given the extreme shape.

In the novice and beginner forum you don't have a gadget 2 available.

I think I bid 2 then 3 over 2red.

Even without the 2 gadget (which I don't use with one partner) I'd take this approach in this instance given the shape.

It would be nice if there was some way to diagnose those when they come up. But alas.

2 for me, I feel confident we won't get passed there (and even if we are, it might not be wrong). It is important to get both suits in with so much shape, and I do not want to overstate our strength when all we have is shape.

Misfits are misfits

If it's a misfit, quit.

I'd be concerned partner holds values in the red suits given that opponents couldn't find a red suit overcall with two opportunities, so I am keeping the bidding low until partner shows some support for one of my suits.

Also the red suit holdings are particularly poor, there is a serious risk that partner can have quite a few cards, and you can never get to dummy.

May also depend if you play WJS, there are 1372/1462 hands where if the auction goes 1-1N-2-2-3 I want to give up in 3 if partner bids it

This was how it panned out - a ridiculous 3NT - which somehow I made but claim no credit - East kept attacking hearts

Even 2S struggled although someone made 4 - and we all missed clubs I think

I'm surprised East didn't overcall hearts, I estimate the majority at my bridge club would on those cards.

Although the South hand is 6-5 it is only a powerful hand opposite a fit in one of the suits. Distributional hands do not play well opposite a misfit so I think 2 on the second round is best on the South cards assuming that is natural, which North will pass. You might make 11 tricks but whatever, it is not going to be easy finding a 22 HCP minor suit game on sub-optimally fitting hands.
