2nd question from the Long Beach Open pairs:

You open 1, LHO doubles, pard bids 2 (Alert! - we play transfers here, so pard has about 3-7 and usually 3 pieces)

Hum.. wierd. Why didn't RHO bid? He seems to have a few spades. Probably LHO has a 5-card spade and a good hand. In that case 3 seems fine. Then if it goes

 

1 dbl 2 pass

3 3 4 4

 

now I can bid 5 with confidence.

Red verses white is not the time to get out of line. Minus 140 is better than minus 200/500 and it seems RHO's pass indicates 4 hearts. If I bid 3H, LHO may well double again and this is not the hand to be playing 3H whacked with spade forces.
