You play matchpoints, 15-17 NT, 5cM, 1 4(+), 1 2(+) but only 2 if 4=4=3=2 out of notrump range. 2 always strong, 2 multi (contains a weak two in either major, 22-23 NT and semiforcing one-suiters) and 2M Muiderberg (5cM, 4(+)cm), 2/1 GF with a semiforcing 1NT.

Your bid. 1NT is semiforcing, 2/1 is GF, 2 is 6-9, 2NT is exactly invitational with Hxx, 3m are Bergen Raises, a jump to 3 is ~10-11 6(+) hearts NF invitational, 3 preemptive, 4 a splinter (if you want to go crazy).

E/W have not competed at white/red so it says, in my book, partner is strong. If 1NT is a semi force, then I am 99% sure partner will bid again. As long as partner is prepared for nebulous 1NT off-shape hands like this opposite. Mrs Bennett would shoot her husband for making such a bid but we are not living in the 1920s, and 1NT does not deny support. It just says you have something but no other bid available. I prefer constructive, (stronger) raises to 2 than this hand, so if we belong in a contract, we can bid it through the 1NT catch all bid.

On to the next round of the bidding we go!

For transparency's sake: 2 is natural and shows at least four. One of the advantages of a semiforcing NT and opening a 5cM in range with 1NT is that this auction can be completely natural.

I use bart in both of my partnerships, so 2D for me. He is supposed to bid 2H unless he is stiff or void. He can bid 3Hbwith a good hand and 5314

Fits are great. But one of my "folk wisdoms" that has served me well over decades is "it plays better in the weak hand's suit". After all, the strong hand's suit might set up for tricks - if it does, you should be able to get there. Here, to me, 7 deep beats known 8-carder.

Of course, I'm going against Day 1 wisdom. Therefore, if it was wrong this time, it's 100% my fault.

Of other course, 1NT SF on this hand is REALLY SCARY. If partner passes with the "flat 13, would be uncomfortable in 3 opposite a 3-card limit", we're -200 into something less than that (possibly even +110). I might pass if the option is getting passed in 1NT. But with 100% forcing, I'm willing to gamble "my suit is worth tricks as trump, and zero in spades".

No Bart, but I'm curious to hear how this auction would have gone with that agreement. I'll reveal the hands at the end of the auction.

2D asks him to bid 2H unless he has 0-1 heart (and he can do it with stiff high honour if his spades are not great, and he can’t bid 2N (showing 17 or so) or 3C (at least 5=5).

If he bids 2H I pass, as I do over 2S. Over 3c I bid 3S. Over 3H (5413, extras) I bid game but my shape suggests he won’t

In one partnership I could bid 3H over 2C but I’m not willing to rule output 2S as a resting spot

I don't think 1NT is too bad though :) It is not too bad because it is correct.

How about a risky Bergen raise :)How about not?

I'm not that dictatorial on my bidding - limit bid in spades isn't too bad - eg 3H which is the weakest (and it fits my estimate of 9 tricks in spades and fits a sim :)) - but I just noted that 3H means something else here - I mean 3S - I don't play Bergen raises :) - a weak limit bid in Spades

and there are always other options - including Pass

Being left in 1NT doesn't really appeal

But the auction has now progressed :)

What do I do now 2H or 2S - since its allegedly a natural auction - and feel relief at not having to play 1NT

And on to the next round!

The people that chose to rebid 2 get to play it there: partner bids 3. I'll reveal the hand when the other auction has finished.

Yes. I think opener should have rebid 2NT, though obviously they are at the top of the 2 range and feared we would pass with as little as a prime 7-count. I'll let the auction stand but I'm curious to hear what you would bid over 2NT as well.

3N doesn’t exist in my world, even without bart. 2N shows a hand that has extras, say a 5134 17-18 count. More than that, he doesn’t bid 2C.

In any event I’m not passing. 3N (or the better 2N) should absolutely not include a heart void, so I’m bidding 4H
