inverted minors passed hand

Recommended Posts

In principle it's still on by a passed hand but obviously it isn't forcing.

If you play strong notrump you can agree the the single raise just promises game opposite a balanced 18. So from 7 points or a decent 6. The double raise is then purely preemptive.

If your style is to open most balanced 11s, there's no downside to playing 2N as a raise also

I see quite a lot of people playing 2/1 saying they open 1 on most 11s

Check their 1N range

If it’s 15-17,:then imo opening balanced 11 counts is a bad idea…your 1N rebid range becomes 11-14, which I think is too wide for reasons I’ve discussed elsewhere. I open almost all balanced 11 counts, but my notrump range is 14-16, so my notrump rebid is what I consider to be the best range…3 hcp, 11-13.

As for the OP, when I play inverted minors (which I often have but don’t now), I’ve always played it off by a passed hand. Two reasons. One is that I don’t understand why we want to preempt to 3m with a weak hand and two passing opps. Once in a while, bidding 2m allows the opps back into the auction, but usually neither opp, both having passed at least once and one twice won’t come in.

Secondly, once we’ve passed in first or second, the frequency with which we’d have a single raise is quite a bit lower than if we were unpassed…added to which is that we really don’t need much of a structure when responder is limited to an invitational bid. Imo, inverted minors benefit from some complexity to allow responder to differentiate between invitational hands and gf or better. Obviously much of that structure becomes irrelevant after responder’s initial pass.
