Do you come in?

If I double my partner will bid 4

When you doubled, you were hoping for good things to happen. This wasn’t a great thing, but you don’t have any call other than an in tempo pass, not revealing by tempo or body language that this wasn’t what you were hoping for.

I agree with this though the slight reservation is if the opps. outbid us, declarer will have a idea of the distribution, and may play the hand differently due to my X.

My reservation is different, opener was about to bid 4 and redoubles with partner having a 3532 yarborough. I've done this and collected 1700 before (the best available result for them was 3xx= vul, 4-1 at the other table)

I reluctantly decided not to come in as I thought if they are at least thinking about bidding game, partner hasn't got much so I might be sticking my neck out too much. This was a mistake:

[hv=pc=n&s=s53hj5dt654cat932&w=st872hqt8764da87c&n=skq96hdqj2ckj8754&e=saj4hak932dk93cq6&d=e&v=e&b=6&a=1hp3hp4hppp]399|300[/hv]

5 is only one down compared to the making 4. One pair found the sac and I guess the other pair found it but the opps bid on to 5=.

I just do not get how West can only bid 3 on this hand, even if the opps. are using Acol. 3 invitational? That is just crazy!

The question remains if the auction goes 1 - 4 do you still X at favorable vulnerability? Even I feel a bit hesitant about that, at a level higher.

She reasoned the hand was worth a constructive invitational to game bid based on the losing trick count so bid 3 invitational on that basis. I'd be more inclined to come in if RHO had raise directly to game as this normally shows a weak distributional hand with a big trump fit, which means a good trump fit our way and partner is very likely to have some values.

Well it convinced me to make the wrong decision. There are still occasional big holes in my judgement in competitive auctions.

You were fixed if your opponent made this anything other than 7 losers...

I think I would still X.

But they are both rather redundant questions if East opens 1NT, as would seem logical to me.

I assume this hand is from our Acol forum contributors, and 1NT is 12-14 here. (I admit I even like the British style of the weak pre-emptive 1NT opening, that was used by Fantunes and Kaplan-Sheinwold system bidders also.)
