hallway
Hi fellow ANZACS, There has been a suggestion that Northern Hemisphere bridgers are superior to Southern Hemisphere bridgers ;) The glove is down Well that sure did prick my ANZAC pride - yours too ?? time then to rally to the FLAG and put a TEAM together: ANZAC Basic League: For Beginners to Intermediate ofcourse we could send out some Expeditionary Forces say the Aussie Hoppers, the 'Flying' Kiwis, the Cuddly Koalas (they could give them a bit of a fright !) or the Mighty Moas (carry quite a kick) Send me an IM to register your interest and I'll be happy to pick up the glove. the hog
Hi fellow ANZACS, There has been a suggestion that Northern Hemisphere bridgers are superior to Southern Hemisphere bridgers - they've gotta be kidding I am afraid the Nthn Hemisphere is FAR superior. Sad, but true.
hrothgar
Hemisphere is a dummy variable It primarily boils down to three factors (a) Population density(:) Total population© GNP per captia (more is not necessarily better)
keylime
I'm waiting for the Western-Eastern hemisphere argument, the Egypt-South Africa one, and let's see, the India-Pakistani battle...
the hog
India - Pakistan is no contest. The Pakis have got some excellent players, even though you guys have kidnapped Zia.India has Om Prakash Chaudry and a couple of young guys. Incidentally by FAR the best in the Southern Hem are the Indonesians. Relatively unknown in the States, they have some world class pairs and some good young players as well. keylime
I was thinking about the Indonesians in my posting -- they have had a sizeable bridge history if one thinks about it. I'd like to see a relative unknown country (similar to Iceland's victory in the early 90's) win the Bermuda Bowl.
the hog
They have won a few Far Easterns and always do well in the South West Pacific teams held in Oz in January when they compete. They are VERY experienced. One of their regular players, Manoppo, (one of the Manoppo twins), was involved in a bit of a scandal about opening leads. See article "Eenie Meenie Miney Manoppo" by Ron Klinger in an old edition of Asutralian Bridge, and see the refutation by Cathy Chua in her book about cheating. keylime
If memory serves there was a funny story involving one or both of the Manoppo brothers competing against the Italian pair in '75 (Facchini-Zucchelli I think...either that or maybe Franco -- someone check me of that) that basically the referee pleaded with BOTH pairs to play "fair". Scary thought isn't it?
Guest
hi Maureen Acol Alligators is designed to be a general Acol "TEAMS GROUP" ... we do not exclude Kiwis or Aussies (pls see my message to you for background) or indeed anyone on Earth, the Moon or local habitable planets :) We'd welcome you all as Acol Alligator ANZACS :) our cousins as it were in the Antipodes, Far East, Pacific. But a separate grouping of you lovely people wd be just as welcome ::) Toodle-ooh for now, Allan :-*
Guest
EXTRACT FROM: ACOL ALLIGATORS TEAMS GROUP (Revised Version and hopefully clarified) I have started a Teams Group for Acol players WORLDWIDE to take part in Teams Matches/Tournaments as they develop and become more popular on BBO. We are called the Acol Alligators (AAs). We hope to have at least 2 Teams ... more as Teams Play becomes a regular feature on BBO: 1st Team for Advanceds/Experts2nd Team for Intermediates and below Intermediates will probably "straddle" the 2 Teams, certainly as Substitutes/Reserves for the 1st Team if not as players initially seated. We may even be able to muster a 3rd Team etc. Our most likely times of availability to play other BBO Teams (at least for AA Teams based in British Isles/Europe) would be: Tuesday or Thursday evenings UK, say from about 8 PM UK; Weekends, Sunday or Saturday, most likely a similar time, but possibly with some degree of flexibility e.g. the occasional afternoon for Time Zones difficult to accommodate. The format would most likely be 2x8 Boards with possibly a short Intermission of 5, 10 or 15 minutes for refreshments etc. and seating changes. Up to 4 Substitutions/Reserves will probably be allowed during the event as required. The Total Pool of Players for each Team should be notified before each match, though should insufficient players and substitutes be available to complete a fixture the Team Captains could by mutual agreement opt to relax this rule and bring in non-notified players. Any Acol players interested in joining the burgeoning throng of the Alligators please send me an email and I'll add you to the mailing list. We shall have Practice Matches on a regular basis hopefully. If other BBO Teams or Teams Groups would be interested to play the Acol Alligators (AAs) please contact me and I'll see what I can arrange. Thank you all Allan NOTA BENE: ACOL ALLIGATORS IS AN UMBRELLA "TEAMS GROUP" FOR ALL ACOL PLAYERS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD ... IT'S NOT MEANT TO BE JUST A BRITISH ISLES/EUROPEAN GROUPING ... WE CAN ACCOMMODATE OTHER "TIME ZONE SUB-GROUPINGS" AS IT WERE WITHIN THE AAs ... PRIME EXAMPLE: NEW ZEALAND, AUSTRALIA, PACIFIC, FAR EAST.
