I think that 90% of players open 1, opp bid 4 p p...what do u bid?

Tks for the answers, Omero

P.S. In Italy some players, me too open 4 for and 4 for if we have 8 cards AKQ.... of 7 cards AKQ... more 1 ace...but here we have AKJ... we could make it, but we try to suppose to open 1

Apparently I am not only marching to a different drummer, I'm in a different parade. But I pass.

I expect pass to bring me minus 420 so the question is whether I can do better by bidding. I don't see ten tricks here and, more importantly perhaps, I don't see nine either. If I am to ruff hearts in dummy, two things have to happen. Partner has to have spades, and rho has to have smaller spades. Maybe so, but I am not betting on it. Similarly, if I am to pick up spades dummy has to have some and I have to get there. And, still, there is no guarantee.

Preempts make us guess, and I guess bidding brings minus 500 more often than not.

I concede that I am thoroughly outvoted here.

Mike Lawrence says that , when opps preempt, and noone else bids, you can usually rely on 7+ "normal" hcp from partner.

Of couse, sometime he does not have it, some other times he might have even more than that, but "on balance" that's what he will have.

The question now is: if pard contributes 7 "nondescript" hcp, do we want to bid game or try and set the contract ?

In this specific hand, I am a 4S bidder.

You don't need much from partner to have a play for this, P shouldn't have heart tricks and 10 hearts (theoretically) have been accounted for in the bidding. If P is something like 1-2-6-4 with few controls, the opps might just be making 4Hts. You might be risking a huge swing by not bidding.

I know, wrong again

Minus 500 + 420 = 80, you risk 2 imps by bidding if your premise about going -420 is correct, you lose 1040 if both 4H and 4S make. You lose a truckload if you're -500 and could have been +100 or 300, but P needs some tricks for that to happen.

unfortunately its MP

Thanks,

I needed that.

still bid 4S although not with as much conviction: too many hands that P can have that passes 4H but provides a trick or two.

and, I suspect that I shall have some company in 4S.

Actually, this hand is perfect for a 4S opening. If opps bid something, double them, showing a decent 4S opener with mild defensive values. The worst that can happen is missing a slam, but that's a 2 or 3% chance. Well worth the rist at MP.
