4. I am not opposed to 3 if that is the partnership's style, but 1 is a bit pointless IMHO with nothing outside spades.

1 plays game when 3 gets passed but partner has enough, and potentially 3N when it's right, also keeps 6/N in the frame where partner doesn't have enough to go on with a stiff spade opposite 3/4 (shooting for AKQxxxx doesn't seem worth it opposite 3).

1 also might not go for 800 against nothing, give partner the wrong hand, x, KQJ10, xxx, QJ10xx or 300 if they can't double.

I decided to be aggressive and open 4 which was the wrong decision on this hand, as it gave the opponents two ways to win.

If North leaves the double, they collect +800, but North chose the action to get an average plus instead of a top. Only one other pair found 5. The most absurd result was one East allowed to play in 3 and allowed to make it.

Hi,

Ok, South passing 5C is ...?

Given that North is a passed hand, was not able to open a 3C preempt, and having a reasonable 6 heart suit,

and I pass? Obviously the 9 card fit in the major is worse, than the 8 card fit in minor, playing MP.

Sry, I also overlook, that X was supposed to be penalty, having AK in a suit, I run.

With kind regards

Marlowe

As it happens it is on this hand. Defending 5, I cash two spades and a third round promotes partner's heart jack, which is what appears to have happened on three tables.

The 3 making by East is not necessarily the silliest score. I have just noticed a couple of contenders in the form of two South declarers playing in 2 and 3.

Sometimes stupid action hit the jackpot, next board. (*)

4SX-3 is the worst case sceanrio, was on, as it is 6H is not on, because the remaining 4 spades break 2-2, which is approx. 50%.

The takeaway from this hand is, discussing with partner preempt styles, you got the whole variety 1S, 3S, 4S, in this thread.

My take is, that 4S is mainstream, followed by 1S, ..., a distant 3rd maybe my bid 3S.

For that matter does the Jack of spade change the opening bid for you?

The result on this hand is for the dustbin.

(*) If you dont attribute this to stupidity, than you have to assume, they had a wire.

"next board." We got a joint bottom on that one.

I'm not sure it makes much difference whether or not I hold the jack. AKQxxxx is more likely than not to be worth seven tricks.

Anything other than 1 is awful.

The x, KQJT, xxx, QJTxx hand is misleading. How do you think the auction will go? 1-1NT; ? and you still get to the same height, off you go.

We get as far as 3 spades depending on how frisky I get and what RHO does, partner might get to double 4 hearts.

5 is average plus, when 5 is laydown? Not the results I would expect.

5 is not laydown. Three rounds of spades promotes West's J, one down.
