In a few weeks I will start playing a Precision system - a very simple version of Meckwell Lite, to be exact. I have never played a strong club system before. My partner suggested I read Daniel Neill's "Standard Modern Precision". I have also previously read Barry Rigal's "Precision in the 90s" as well as "Precision Today" by Berkowitz and Manley.Do you have suggestions for other introduction-level sources on Meckwell Lite, or Precision in general? And is there a checklist similar to Cohen's list for Precision players (or do you perhaps have suggestions for individual questions that should be discussed)? This is the 2021 (7th edition) of "2/1 Game Force system: The final word" with Chapters on Precision simplified, Transfer Precision and Meckwell lite. HardVector Posted February 10, 2022 Report Share Posted February 10, 2022 Personally, I've found that it's best to understand the fundamental difference in Precision auctions and standard. That is that all strong hands begin with 1♣. You will find that auctions that don't start with that bid become much easier in that very often slam is off the table if you have just moderate values opposite. Conversely, if you do start with 1♣, you will find that people have become VERY aggressive against that bid. helene_t Posted February 11, 2022 Report Share Posted February 11, 2022 I am a fairly basic Precision player as I have mostly plaid it with pick-up partners and beginners, and then a couple of more regular partnerships where we experienced with a myriad of crazy treatments for fun. So my experience may not be so relevant for the more serious Precision pairs. Anyway, here are my thoughts: - Don't worry too much about the uncontested 1♣ auctions. You won't get that many of them, and basic natural follow ups will do. Of course you can also agree on SR or Janersten asking bids or transfers or whatever if you are both familiar with them.- Leads, carding, Notrump structure and defensive bidding, of course, as in every system. System on/off in various contested auctions.- Notrump ladder. 1NT=14-16, and Kokish=20-22/25+ for example.- Follow ups after 2♣. - Forcing character of 2/1. In Forum Precision we ended up with auto-forcing as in SEF/SAYC but I think it goes against the philosophy of captainship. - Handling interference over 1♣. The forcing character of 2/1 is a particularly good topic to discuss, I did not even suspect there might be issues there. As is how to handle interference over 1♣ - I think my partner prefers something very simple (pass 0-6, any bid 7+ GF natural) but I'll make sure to bring that up as well.Neil Timm's chapters mostly read like a system description ("After start ABC, bid D means the following") and is beyond my scope for now.Daniel Neill's book indeed exclusively describes Meckwell Lite, and I found it a very enjoyable read.
