Competing to 6 level

Hi

Recent hand from Bot MP tourney, best hand South

[hv=pc=n&s=sakqjt43hj2d8ckq6&d=e&v=b&b=10&a=2d(6%2BD%20%3C10%20pts)4s(pre-empt - should be 2S)5dpp5spp6d]133|200[/hv]

Out of 30+ hands this ended in either 4S, 5D, or 6D with nobody doubling 6D

10th hand in MP tourney

I thought about doubling but chickened out. But I didn't even countenance 6S

4 over 2 should be a good hand not a preempt, possibly better than this, this is borderline between 3 (which is also a good hand) and 4. If 6 should be bid or 6 should be doubled, that's partner's job.

Bidding 'weak over weak' is not as unpopular (anymore?). With a shapely hand with good playing strength it pays to put the opponents to a guess, provided partner knows you might have a weak hand for this jump bid.

I would probably have doubled on the first round, hoping the opponents don't jump to 5 immediately so I can bid 4. The 6 bid is outlandish, and partner should more than likely have doubled if you pass. South, however, is done.

Putting partner to a guess as to the strength of your hand is bad bridge, regardless of “popularity”.

I suggest choosing weak or strong but not weak and strong.

Yes, I'm choosing weak. But slightly wide-ranged - around 9-14 HCP.

Putting partner to a guess on a preemptive auction may occasionally be the least of all evils, as much as I would like to avoid it.

Keep in mind where this hand was posted. 👍
