I was back for F2F bridge for the first time since the initial lockdown and with my usual partner suffering from flu arranged a pick-up partner.

Never having played together we fixed on playing SAYC rather than the more traditional club ACOL

My 3♥ bid was meant to show a mixed raise mini-splinter, but in the absence of agreements I guess it was interpreted as a GF ♥ holding. I naturally rebid 4♠ over 4♥ and we ended perhaps fortuitously in 6♠ for the only made slam of the evening

 

How would others have interpreted 3♥ and what would have been a more convincing auction?

I agree with Cyberyeti. In the absence of detailed agreements you might have tried 3♣ - values and spades.

That makes sense and removes the risk a of a pass with a minimum. Perhaps I could redefine fit jumps as either 5+ with 4 card support (I think this may be standard) or 4144 showing the singleton

I don't like two-way when one option can be shortness at all. It also makes it very difficult for partner to compete if the opponents interfere, since you have no idea about the offensive and defensive potential of values in the suit partner just mentioned.

I actually have the cutest image of a kitten running into an 8-4 trump break after a splinter misunderstanding, but I can't seem to link it here. Maybe it's for the best.

Without previous agreement, I would have treated 3♥ as weak and preemptive, showing approximately 4 HCPs, at least 7 ♥, and no outside values, where 2♥ shows 10+ and 5+ ♥ which is forcing.

 

As North, I would have bid 2♣, meaning limit raise or better, and South, having further interest, would bid 3♣ to indicate willing to explore something more than 4♠ and creating a GF auction.

 

North, having no further interest, just bids 3♠ to show a minimum, and the auction stops at 4♠. I won't have a slam interest in this hand.

You're a level off in your auction. North needs to start with 3C after the overcall.

What does 3C (jump cuebid) mean here?

3♣ isn't a jump cuebid. It's a normal cuebid - limit raise or better. A jump cuebid of 4♣ would be a splinter.
