Temperature Check

Recommended Posts

too much value concentration and the spade stop to consider much else 2d. Axx x Qxxxxx KJx and I am willing to go quietly to my probable doom. Change me to AQx x xxxxxx KJx and double looks a lot better (I will have my apology card ready for display if it does not work). xxx x AKQJxx xxx looks an awful like a 3d bid to me.

Amazing just how magical HCP can be. Their value seems to constantly shift.

I checked my temperature and it appears I'm still alive, so 2..

agree. you should not X with weaker unbalanced hands even with stiff/void in opps. suit when another sensible bid is available. 2 is sensible though some will bid 3 here at white/red. thats partnership style/agreement.

1st question is easy. Green, AK 6th and some side goodies. A minimal but normal overcall. If partner next jumps to 3NT, I won’t be ashamed tabling dummy.

Now, over the reopening X, 5C would be exaggerate I think, even if partner’s hand is not too well defined at that stage (I guess with 4-cd S suit, they would bid 3S? what strength can we expect?).

If we could legitimately hesitate the round before to fit partner over 3H, now I think it it too late to have 2nd thoughts.

We could lose 3 tricks depending on partner’s major holdings and C suit (Axx Kxx xx AQJxxx or AKx xxx xx AKxxxx). Comes back again to what can we expect from partner.

Easy at MPs and safe choice at IMPs, we’re not even red to consider being lucky or bold.

4 bid now. partner will know you are bare minimum for 2 overcall as you passed 3. west X can never be for penalty here even though there may be a small percentage of hands where north's 3 can go down bad (-500/-800). most norths would not bid 3 red/white with garbage after partner passes. I expect north to have at least 8 tricks in own hand.

Depends on partnership style and form of scoring. IMO..

1. Pass if 2-level overcalls are sound.

2. 2 otherwise, at MPs; [/hv][hv=pc=n&e=sqj2htdak7654c965&d=n&v=n&b=5&a=1h2dp3c3hppxp?]133|200|

JillyBean '2D it is, and it continues. Auction fixed

Now, I rank...

1. 4. Reluctant support.

2. 3. Economical, reasonable suit.

3. 3. Good hand in context.

4. 3. Exaggeration.

5. Pass. Might work.[/hv]

3 and 3 are perhaps excessively economical (though a good way of silencing zealous partner).

Hi,

it is either 2D or 3D.

Given that we are white vs. red, 3D could be a lot less than we actually got and given partner did not have a chance to speak,

I think I am going with 2D.

In the followup auction you gave, I am passing, but I would have raised to 4C the round before.

It helps a bit, if I know the South player, there are players, I would never go with Pass, and others,

where I expect 800+.

With kind regards

Marlowe

Argh, PesceTom! Thank you. :(

Good problem, JillyBean.

Now, I rank some of the sufficient bids as :)

1. 4. Reluctant support

2. Pass. Timid

3. 3. OK, in context.

South has an easy raise of partners opening 1. East thought X was penalty, was West too aggressive?

South and East made some mistakes here. North made the biggest one though, with that crazy rebid. West's X is aggressive without shape - the double says "I would like to bid but don't know what", but the question is whether you want to bid at all. The chance partner has a heart stop is small, plus partner was allowed to bid over 3 with extras. On the other hand all of West's 11 points are working on offense. I would have passed, trusting that I have already shown my values.

In conclusion, all four players seem to have messed up. Quite the board.

I don't understand West's "I would like to bid something but don't know what" double, West has denied both spades, and diamond support.

Isn't the double here more of a value showing bid, DSIP, or leave it in?
