This was a very close vote. The panel was split.. 4 votes for 2, and three votes each for 3 and double. I think we might agree that Fred is among the strongest of our panelist, so let's see what he has to say.

Fred 2. I would have bid 3 (barely) if East has passed, but my xxx of clubs is about the worst possible holding with the suit being bid on my right. That and my lack of texture in the spade suit (which might be breaking badly) are enough to convince me to go low here.

Luis, Roland and Arend were on the same track as fred. Luis 2. The 3 small clubs are a very bad holding, and the texture of the spade suit is not exactly the best we can have. So I think 2 should be enough. The only option 3s would show either a better hand or a hand with this strength and a much better suit. Walddk said 2. I might have jumped to 3 without interference, but the overcall has cooled me down. The only problem I see is that we may have a heart fit that plays better than spades, but 3S wouldn't have helped either. I did make a free bid when I could have passed, so if partner has something, he will bid again. Cherdano2 For me, this is the toughest hand of the set, but i settle for the slight underbid. Since I have 5-5.5 losers, and many of partners potential hcp would be wasted, I hope it's not too much of an underbid.

While the 2 bidders were uniform in their judgement of why 2 was best, the three 3 bidders had quite a different views. One implying 3 a slight push, another 3 was a slight underbid, and the third, thinking 3 was perfect. Cascade, like the panelist above was worried about the three small clubs. But he didn’t let that alter his normal rebid 3 I am a bit put off by the three small clubs. It increases the chance that this hand is a misfit but this is my value bid.. Justin pulls in a little with his rebid, as he thought the value bid was almost 4, but he went with 3, saying Jlall 3S. Very borderline between 3 and 4. I would have bid 4S had RHO passed but this 2 bid makes me hate my club holding with LHO about to lead a club through. I'll go low now. Just for the record I really hate a 3 cue here. I'm sure someone will try it but I think it overstates the values, complicates things needlessly, and is just a bad bid. [/i] While Gabor had no problem with this hand, ng 3. This one is easy, describes my shape and strength.

The doublers seemed to not be able to make up their mind between two and three spades, so they planned to double then correct to 2 as a sort of 2.5 bid. We will let them speak for themselves. Ritong Double, means " i am stuck", can also be with that handtype, where spades are a tad light for three spades. Fluffy Double, rectifying any bid with at the same level, but raising bids. Reisig Double (if it shows any good hand, not penalty) - if not – 2. It is not penalty.

The doublers seem to be more on the right track than the 3 bidders, and more in agreement with the 2 bidders that the hand isn’t up to a 3 bid. So, I scored dbl higher than 3.

interesting... double, a bid fred never mentioned, got more points than 3s, a bid he did mention

The clear intention of the doublers was to bid 2 over partners red suit response. So the bidding can stop in 2. In the real world with this hand, if partner is very weak, the doublers and the 2 bidders will end up in the same spot, one slot lower than the 3 bidders, and thus deserve a better score.

But, responder with long diamonds and four hearts, and weak, might easily bid 2 and then correct 2 (after the double) to 3, assuming if opener lacked hearts, he must have diamonds. So, double is clearly not the best choice either. I happen to agree with the panel's majority that 2 on this auction is enough. Since i hold that view, any bid that has a chance to let me not go beyond 2 if partner is weak is better than a bid that forces us to 3. Thus, the scoring.

Wow, I almost echoed Fred's comments word by word. I have to consider retirement now that I did something well :-)

WOW -- even though I didn't post comment here I did actually bid 2 AND for the first and only time in the first three BBO polls actually scored 100     ( and I think 100 is my maximum score in any of them) :D
